"He may be the most famous American team sport athlete in the world. But he can walk down the street he grew up on in New Jersey without anyone saying a word. Who is he? You'll meet him tonight on 60 Minutes."
I wonder if they'll pay me a freelance fee for writing that lede. Anyway, in a pretty meandering weekly column, Grant Wahl says he has heard that 60 Minutes may be working on a profile of Tim Howard. Just a hunch, but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that the BigSoccer effect helped ratings for the Freddy show. Perhaps it helped them in the 18-49 age demographic. It would be pretty easy for them to notice an increase there, because it would be the only viewers in that age range that they'd ever had.

Word is that 60 Minutes is putting together a story on U.S. keeper Tim Howard, which would make that two pieces on U.S. soccer players by Mike Wallace & Co. in the space of a year. (Freddy Adu was the first.) We'll know that soccer has really made it when the Eye airs its upcoming Steve Kroft exposé Torsten Frings Comes Clean: It Should Have Been a Penalty ...
Anyway, if it turns out to be true, it would be great news. I would assume, rather than sending a film crew to England, that the show would send a crew to some of the ManU Tour games to get in-game shots, and perhaps even the Poland game this weekend (although I would expect them to film in New York). If so, those in attendance need to be on a lookout for a film crew and report back here. Also keep an eye open for Lesley Stahl, Steve Kroft, Ed Bradley, etc. Also be on the lookout for Brad Friedel charging in front of the camera and letting the American public know that Howard really isn't that good and shouldn't be allowed to play in England, possibly at a volume so loud that he loses the phony English accent for a minute.
Love the Torsten Frings line, by the way .....
