Who would you pick and what system would you play?
Bowyer? Gerrard? Beckham? Scholes? Sinclair? Hargreaves? Cole? Butt? Heskey? Dyer? Murphy?

Butt Bowyer Gerrard Beckham
All four have proved there worth their salt and they are the only four i would pick.
Hargreaves and Scholes could fill on the bench.

My lineup would be....at central midfielder they should have Gerrard (Lampard) to go up and attack and one to stay defensive, probably Hargreaves (Carrick, King). On the right Lennon (Beckham) and on the left put Downing (J. Cole). Up front with Rooney should be Darren Bent (bring in Owen/Dafoe for speed or Crouch for headers) and the backline should be Bridge (A. Cole), Terry (nobody subs for the captain but probably King or Carragher), Ferdinand (King or Carragher) and G. Neville (Micah Richards) with Robinson in goal.

G. Neville-----Ferdinand-----Terry-----Bridge
Hargreaves
Lennon-----Gerrard-----Downing
Rooney-----Bent

Agreed, with the possible exception of Joe Cole. Good player, but not sure he fits on the left without an attacking leftback, where Downing is a straight winger.
With Ashley Cole, you have enough support/speed up the wing if Joe drifts inside, but if you've got a true left back, then you need someone who can cross the ball from the left midfield/forward position.

Interesting you have 2 left wingers playing in the same midfield, one of which, is not quite as speedy as you would like to imagine..

I think the main problem with the England midfield is that neither Gerrard or Lampard have stepped up to fill the gap left by Beckham. Neither of them seem interested in taking a game by the scruff of the neck like he did, they just wander around not really doing anything.

if you decide to play four midfielders then gerrard defensively, as he has crunching tackles and a great engine but not the best technique or first touch. Then scholes who is superb. Except you kicked him out so I suppose joe cole in the middle alongside gerrard.
With hargreaves on the right (yes, he is very versatile), and gareth barry or someone on the left.
Basically I think this midfield should be able to switch around a bit with hargreaves coming in centrally when joe cole moves to the left, and gerrad moving to the right when hargreaves comes into the middle.

:DAnyone who can pass the ball accurately to a teammate in a forwards position, tackle & win the ball without a yellow card or free kick being awarded to the opposition, run at the opposing team with pace & keep control of the ball, has vision & understands the position his teammates are moving into. or am I asking too much here...
