:DAnyone who can pass the ball accurately to a teammate in a forwards position, tackle & win the ball without a yellow card or free kick being awarded to the opposition, run at the opposing team with pace & keep control of the ball, has vision & understands the position his teammates are moving into. or am I asking too much here...

you're onto it, except those ones won't get picked by the FA as they aren't celebrities that will increase revenue for the FA

But if they were picked & played like that the team would win & those players would be the new celebrities. & the FA would make even more money because the team wins. Or are the suits at the FA too short sighted to see that. I think the real problem is findinf English players to play like that in an England jersey. Even if they do that for their clubs. But McClaren could get brave & really try out & few more faces on the pitch for longer than 10 mins in a friendly.

Cant argue with that, Carlton Palmer is the best player ever to have lived, such grace on the ball.

England should ditch the 442 tactic
Why not use the tactic that brazil use so successfully recently
4 - 2 - 2 - 2 this would be very ideals for us
With couple of defensive midfield holidng the line and two attacking midfield position allowing lampard or gerrard go free
it would be like this
----------------------Robinson------------------------
---Richards-----Rio----------Terry----------A cole-----
----------------Hargreaves-----Carrick/Gerrard-------
---------------------------------------------------------
--------------Lampard--------J Cole/ Gerrard---------------
------------------------Rooney---------------------------
------------------------Owen (or whatever striker is fit)----

Whatta ya all thinks?

Used so successfully recently? Didn't they do no better in the world cup than England?

Ive said it before but i'd like to see Matty Taylor get a chance on left. Perhaps in this type of a midfield formation:

-------------------------Hargreaves-----------------------
---Beckham -------------------------------------Taylor---
-------------------------Gerrard---------------------------

Just a thought.....

^^^^^Ledley King & Joey Barton in central midfield. I'm pretty drunk right now, but that seemsl like the stupidest idea ever. Ledley King in midfield? No. Bloody. Way.

Please go become an American football fan now.

-----------Hargreaves----------
Beckham------------------Cole-
------------Gerrard-------------

But who should be groomed for the right after Beckham retires? Bentley, SWP, Lennon or Ruel 'Foxy' Fox?

And why do people keep mentioning Scholes? Has he come out of international retirement?

Hargreaves and Carrick sitting in central midfield to allow Cole, Rooney and Gerrard to roam further forward in a 4-2-3-1.

sounds good to me.
something along the lines of 4-2-3-1 would be good.
shame ,mcClown will never think of it and try and shoehorn everyone into a 442

Who would you play up front in that formation?

Who would you play up front in that formation?

It all depends on how you wish to play and the level of opposition. Owen would do well with those three behind him threading through balls, although if he is not supported then he would struggle in that lone position. Several English strikers (with pace) have played as lone strikers for their clubs and done well.

If only the manager had the guts to play thet. But I think we will have to wait for this generation to die off before we see any real progress. As long as Lampard keeps scoring from deflections off Drogba's ear people will think he is some amazing midfield maestro.
