AP Poll: Bush Gains Slight Lead Over Kerry (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&e=4&u=/ap/20040708/ap_on_el_pr/presidential_ap_poll)

WASHINGTON - President Bush has opened a slight lead over John Kerry while regaining the confidence of some voters on the economy and other domestic issues, according to an Associated Press poll with a silver lining for Democrats.

The addition of Sen. John Edwards to Kerry's ticket appears to have helped the Democrat in the South and among low-income voters — a result the Massachusetts senator had hoped for when he selected the North Carolina populist over more seasoned politicians.

"I'm more impressed with Kerry now that he chose Edwards," said Republican voter Robin Smith, 45, a teacher from Summerville, S.C. "I look at Kerry and I don't trust him, but he's got Edwards, who's more middle-of-the-road, a strong speaker, more able to reach the common man."

The AP-Ipsos poll found Bush leading Kerry just outside the margin of error, with the president's support at 49 percent, Kerry at 45 percent and independent candidate Ralph Nader at 3 percent. The Bush-Kerry matchup was tied a month ago, when Nader had 6 percent.

That's just a stupid, stupid reason to vote for a president. I can see voting against a ticket if you hate the VP candidate but I don't see the sense in voting for a person you don't trust just because you like their running mate.

I hate people.

But overall Kerry has lost a couple points after picking Edwards.

But overall Kerry has lost a couple points after picking Edwards. In one poll. In another, Kerry had a lead outside the MOE.

And Gephardt still sucks.

Compare that with every other Democratic VP announcement.

Kerry & Edwards are way too liberal; I can't believe that America has moved so far left as to elect either of these two radicals, much less both of them. We need to stay the ocurse and stay with our favorite Texas son!

Bush/Cheney in 2004!

Aren't these polls tremendously misleading though? So what if Bush is up on Kerry or vice versa, the electoral college is all that matters. I'm just wondering why they don't try an electoral poll sometime, polling in each state to give an overall picture of what the possible electoral count could be come November?

I think the problem is that so many states are within the margin of error that awarding a state to one candidate or the other when the difference is 1% with a margin of error of +/- 4% is a bit unfair and lkely misleading.

First of all, if you compare how much money they had growing up, it's no comparison. Second of all, even now, I'd be surprised if Edwards is wealthier once you take into account that Bush has a very rich 80 year old father.

Did she say she was going to vote for Kerry because of Edwards? OI don't see where that is stated.

I do see where she says she is more impressed with Kerry because of his VP choice, but that doesn't necessarily mean she is going to vote for him.

I hate people who hate people.

Rasmussen: Kerry 47 - 46 Bush. (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Presidential_Tracking_Poll.htm)

Their Electoral College page (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Electoral%20College%20Projection.htm) is a great detailed source. It shows Kerry up 247-203 but with Gore states Michigan, Maine, and Iowa among the toss-ups.
