MATTUS, William of Costa Rica!

The refs for the first 3 games are set, but keep discussion only on the guy from Costa Rica.

Anybody know his history?

He officiated Japan-Belgium and Ecuador-Croatia at the world cup. There was a little controversy in the Japan game as he disallowed a goal by Inamoto(?) late in the match.

Not sure if he's ever done a US senior team match before...with the US and CR often in the same WCQ group we haven't seen to many Costa Rican referees. He did ref the second leg of the olympic qualifier against St. Kitts.

Mattus has a pretty good reputation, except for that one terrible call in Japan-Belgium.

His record in FIFA competitions also includes Real Madrid vs. Corinthians in the 2000 World Club Championship, and three matches at the 1999 WYC. At the latter, he officiated two matches in Group E (the USA's group) but none of our matches. (Interestingly enough, both of those Group E matches involved Japan.)

In the last WCQ cycle, he officiated Mexico-Canada in the semifinal round; during the Hex, he worked in Asia rather than in CONCACAF, so we had no chance of seeing him. Mattus was the referee for Iran's home leg of the playoff against Ireland.

we are in CONCACAF, so we have a CONCACAF ref-what did you expect? For the last round, we might get some others- I saw Collina in Foxboro for US-El Salvador in 1997.

He's currently at Copa America, though he hasn't yet called a game.

Personally, I don't see any reason to complain about Mattus at all. He's a top Concacaf referee, and I'm happy we got him over Navarro or Dracula Rodriguez, or any Caribbean ref. That said, here's a Spanish-language link describing a 2003 game where he awarded a late PK to Mexico, then sent off the opposing coach.

By the way, it's good to see Terry Vaughn getting a game, even if it's just St. Vincent - Trinidad. I wonder when Brian Hall gets back ...
