Someone please tell me some great derbies in English football and why do these clubs HATE each other? I think Millwall vs. West Ham Utd is one of them, correct?

Thanks.

Derbies are always through locality, although regular matches help - as far as I'm aware nobody seems to regard Leyton Orient as their rivals, despite being slap in the middle of the Spurs-Arsenal-West Ham triangle.
There's certainly a nasty hooligan-related edge to any West Ham/Millwall/Chelsea clash.

Cardiff/Swansea was always an absolute mental one. I recall an autoglass trophy match (a competition for lower div clubs watched by paltry crowds of around 1000-2000 up until the later rounds) when Swansea played at Cardiff. Rather than 2000 there were 22,000 there.

essentially the nearer the teams, the greater the rivalry, unless one club is clearly much bigger than the other - Southampton fans hate Portsmouth but have no problem with Bournemouth who are just as near in the other direction.

Off the top of my head the most heated (non premiership) rivalries would probably be Sheff Utd/Sheff Weds, Burnley/Preston, Bristol City/Rovers, Stoke City/Port Vale, Derby/Nottm Forest

I have heard that Millwall and West Ham Utd have some of the roughest supporters in England. Aren't they both near each other? They have to hate each other.

Is there a great book/video/dvd on derbies, rivalries or hooligans that someone can suggest? I'm in the USA, so please try and make the DVDs or Videos North American campatiable.

Thanks.

This is a huge one (although I am biased). For years in the mid-late 90s no away supporters were allowed to go to the games due to past trouble. If you go to Swansea and tell people you are from Cardiff you are on your way to a swift shoeing. This is unlikely to be played for a fair while though as the bluebirds march on and the Jacks move towards oblivion.

Cardiff City and both the Bristol teams (especially city) have a big rivalry as well.

there are no good hooligan books. they are all a pile of crap. you might as well just imagine fights in your head because that's what the vast majority of these authors have done.

LOL.....this is hilarious. I kind of imagined those books would contain profanity and fights.

I really miss those games against St*ke, because basically they find it so hard to beat us. ;)

But whereas Vale fans used to have a soft spot for Crewe, we now dislike them almost as much, because they have become arrogant since they got promoted. Can't help but admire what old Dario has done though, but he bores the pants off you when he gets on the radio.

Catfish - here are some of the derbies you'll see in the football league this season...

Burnley-Preston
Derby-Forest
Leicester-Derby
Millwall-West Ham
Leicester-Coventry
Sheffield United-Rotherham
Cardiff-Millwall (sadly)
Sheffield Wednesday-Chesterfield
Kidderminster-Cheltenham (so I'm told)

Interesting how many traditional rivals are seperated by divisions this year.

Every fan probably finds his or her team's derby matches most important. For me it's Cambridge-Peterborough, pretty much the only time you'll ever see real violence at the Abbey. Although the games against Northampton and Colchester are usually quite interesting as well.

But those games would probably be pretty meaningless to most other fans, just as I'm not all that interested in Forest-Leicester or Burnley-Preston.

Forest vs Derby this year must be one of, if not the biggest rivalry in the lower leagues this season. Two teams with so much history, living so close to each other with so much hatred leads to one hell of a derby match.

Come on you reds

Colchester Vs. Wycombe or Colchester Vs. Southend are always goodens, there was over a 1000 policemen and the LDV Vans games last season. On the match at Roots Hall every travelling Col Utd fan had their own personal policeman....some had two!

Well.... now it could be Leeds Utd. against Sheffield Utd. A rematch of a FA Cup tie two years ago can no be replayed throughout the season.
