I think this thread is necessary, they played their style and won it, bah to all of you with your bla bla bla anti football crap. Greece played their game and won it with clarity and tactical GOLD.

I don't like defensive soccer because it keeps the final scores low, but it doesn't take away from greece their first EURO trophy, and it is up to "attack" football nations to beat that tactic, not beat the team that defended well over the head with " well you guys ruin football... bla..." shut up with that crap because that's what it is. If you can't beat the tactic it's because your not learning from the losses to that same tactic. it's not like eleven players can make a 20 foot wall across the front of the goal, if you cant score your set plays thats your fault, over defensiveness cause fouls in front of goal and around the area, so thats where that tactic gets beat, good set plays. if maniche scored two like the one against the Dutch it would have been a different score, but bad crosses and field goal style free kicks lost this game.

They won, they beat my country's team, who BTW should have learned something from that first game, because greece's tactics were exactly the same in the final as in the opener. So no sour grapes from me.

Portugal failed where it always does... putting it in the net, if the other teams let us get those 10-20 shots on goal it usually takes us to get one in the net, we should know that greece would not give us maybe even 5 clear ones, so we lost, plain and simple.

When I lived in portugal for 5 years during High School I heard something said over and over by sad Benfica fans,

and this is the most true rule in soccer.

yeah yeah sometimes you tie... but thats in league play, in a final there can be only one winner. not two teams that tie.

We didnt score and we lost.

Also want to say congrats to Greece. Did that already too many times here in Lisbon where after the final many portuguese and greeks went to the streets to enjoy ourselves but of course the greeks were happier than us!

Who cares about the way they play! They play pragmatic football, they don't have galacticos in their team but they won against galacticos. If I had no galacticos on my team would I play offensive?

I was listening to some radio show today ..

and It was wondering what happened to players like Figo, Zidane, Rolando, and whomeever else gets paid MILLIONS of dollars for there talent.

and They wondered why.. they coudln't pass through the greek defence..

Also i have seen the last couple of games twice, everyone says the greek players are always in the box,, I think you guys need some prescription glasses and open your eyes a bit more, and YOULL see the greeks playing everywhere on the field LIKE FOOTBALL is supposed to be.

Can't win just a game on Defence.. you need to the offence to win a game as well and greece showed they had both....

I will congratuale Greece for winning the Euro 2004, even if they play in a boring but efficient way. To win the tournament, we need to win all the games but sometime also have to win it by penalties. Everyone remembers the winners for a long time and not the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc even when these teams play attactive football. Some people do remember that Portuguese and Czechs play attractive football, but these teams won't be remember after 10 years. There are many fans that like Zidane, Henry, Beckham, Totti and watch football because of these stars. But a true fan will alsp see the philosophical nature of the game. These guys are popular and attractive to watch, but they do have their off days too. Some of them are too gung-ho to score. Greece won because they got their tactics right and prevent star oppoents from blasting their goal. The team is full of enthusism and grit. Big match mentality is also essential. Italy and England never won a tournament for a very long time even their players are very good because they choke at the knockout games, their players cannot handle the pressure. No one expect much from Greece but they handle the pressure well. Greece won the trophy for all the small nations. Its a lesson to all of us that even we have not many people we can still succeed with good organistion and management.
