I am into pop-rock music and I want to write some music and lyrics, but every time I come up with a good line, I can never build on or around it. Bands I want to sound like are Vertical Horizon, Goo Goo Dolls, NINE DAYS, and the new song "I Don't Want to Be" from Gavin DeGraw.

Please give me any sort of advice/help/tips regarding both music and lyrics. BTW, I have an acoustic guitar [hopefully] soon a Squier Strat (for $10!).

My experience with writing songs, (all be it comedy ones) is that the idea just pops in my head and when I get a tune, the lyrics seem to write themselves. I wish I could give you more advice... just stick with it, write down any ideas you have and see what happens. :)

Try hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
If, all of a sudden, there shines a shiny demon in the middle of the road, you're in business.

Hm, well, if you want to sound like the goo goo dolls, I'd recommend listening to a lot of Bon Jovi.

If you want to sound like the Goo Goo Dolls just pretend you're a melodramatic, whining bitch. It worked for Creed.

Thanks for the advice. Sorry for no reply, I've been gone for a long time. I can think of good tunes and lyrics, but never enough to quite make a song out of.

music and lyrics? sounds like a song to me - if you need lyrics, send me a tune - those come easily to me - if only i could write music worth a crap...
