Unless something earth-shattering comes out in the next 6 months, There is not a doubt in my mind that this one should win it:

I haven't heard any of these releases.
In fact, I have no idea what the two are in UY's reply.

You ought to join the BigSoccer mixtape project, then.

(not meaning to disrespect anybody's choices) but a lot of albums people like in this forum are more mellow types of music. they're quality, but just not my cup of tea.
anybody got any suggestions for some good ol' hard-rockin' albums? something that forces me to put the top down on my car, crank up the radio and air guitar instead of keeping my hands in the 10 and 2 position?

Wilco's has like four raging guitar solos in the first five songs.

The first one is Of Montreal's "Satanic Panic in the Attic."
I liked this band before, and they have had some pretty good albums, but this one is totally different from EVERYTHIGN they have ever done, and is also, ironically, their best by far. On the LP, the first side is probabaly THE best first side of any album released during the last 5 - 10 years. It's pop, pure and simple, and not other album is better to get you happy on a sunny day. or a rainy day. i dunno how describe it really. But, be sure, it is by no means "Mellow"
just buy it.
The second one is "The Power Out" by Electrelane. Electrelane is an all-girl group from Bristol (i think). The funny thing about them, though, is that up until this album, everythign they played was doens without vocals. All of their foundation for making songs was built on the almost jazz-like principle of just making music that conveys a feeling or emotion. Now, it just so happens that their guitarist also happens to be one HELL of a vocalist. Combien all that, with a session with Steve mother********ing Albini...And you get "The Power Out." It is , at times, one of the most sublimely beautiful albums i have ever heard.
buy that one also.
yep.

I begrudgingly agree with this. I've not purchased a better album yet this year.

I find it kind of depressing that I can't think of a record this year that I really really like.
I would say Wilco, but I don't want to be too hasty.

You all are fooling yourselves.
By rule I thought the record of the year had to go to someone that is in the decline (or further) of his career and someone nobody even knew had an album out that year.
I think the safe bets are on:
Sting
Prince
Santana
Warren Zevon
Aerosmith
Bruce Springstein
George Harrison
Y'know, if any of them put an album out this year.
