What ever happened to him? Why and when did he retire, stuff like that. DC needs to get another player like him that is just an allout goalscorer. They have forwards like Alecko and Jaime that can check back to the ball, hold it and give it up. but i dont think any of DC's forwards have that killer instinct(though i think Alecko is starting to develop it). Remember how Lassiter would disappear for almost entire games, then make a near post run and score( quoting Rob Stone). DC has good supporting forwards(e.g. Moreno) but they dont have that guy who basically stands in the box, gets the ball and puts it away.(e.g. Nistelrooy, Crespo). If DC gets a guy like that i think their SOME of their troubles will be alleviated.

It might help a bit if we had a midfield that teed the ball up on the two-foot line a couple dozen times a season too.

Not to highjack the thread, but since it's about Roy...
Is anyone else annoyed by Kreis being "the leading" goal scorer? Roy got his 88 in what 5/6 seasons, and it takes Kreis 9 to do the same. Not to take anything away from him that he deserves (an average of 10+ goals a season for 9 seasons is impressive), but it just seems wrong to belittle Roy's accomplishment by not adding time into the factor.

most of Roys were served up by el pibe himself, Jason's had to create his on his own

Exactly what I was thinking, although Roy did have the advantage of having Valderama set up almost 1/3 of his goals.
I think a good finisher and most of DC's problems will be aleviated. There has been a strong group of players in place for the past 4 or 5 years, except for one piece, and that has been up top. I said it before this year. It doesn't matter what type of organization or tactics Nowak uses. Unless one of the current strikers consistently finds net, or DC gets a striker, DC will be an average team at best.

Of course, a LOT of team's scoring problems would be alleviated by getting a Van Nistelrooy.... :D
Though I think that Alecko has some of the right instincts to get himself into a position where the ball will be and turn a small percentage chance into a goal.

Roy gets a lot of crap for being one dimensional but in his two seasons at DC United he had 17 assists to go along with the 36 goals (for you newer fans, yes he alone scored 36 goals in two seasons not including Jamie and everyone else!).
Comparitively speaking, Olsen's best two years were only 18 assists and Convey has but 15 assists for his entire career.
Say what you will about Lassiter, but don't lose sight that he contributed to our team in more than just goal scoring.

Roy never got much credit for being MLS leading goalscorer. I think part of it is because whenever he became MLS leader he wasn't surpassing some pre-existing mark that fans knew about. Since he scored 27 goals in his first season, he was probably always at, or near the top of the MLS all time goals list.
Also, he never really retired so there's always the (increasingly remote) chance that he could come back and score more.
FWIW, I consider Roy Lassiter statistically the best US / American outdoor top division scorer since Giorgio Chinaglia. In addition to his 88 regular season goals he had 13 playoff goals (Kreis has 4). Without counting Open Cup or CONCACAF cup games (I watched him put 4 in against Joe Public) Roy Lassiter has 101 goals in top division competitive games.
I don't know of any other American player in the past 20 years that has scored over 100 goals in competitive games - maybe Earnie in Holland?
Love him or hate him - Roy Lassiter found ways to put the ball in the back of the net.

I'll use this thread to address DC's striker problems. They have good strikers that can set up the goals but no one that can really put them away. To be a good striker you have to be a tad selfish(e.g. Ronaldo in his prime). I saw a vid of Ronaldo playing for Brazil which exemplified what a good striker should do. He got the ball in midfield, went at the other team's defenders and scored despite the fact that he had two of his own players that were wide open. I'm not saying that DC needs to go out and sign Ronaldo(though that would help), they just need a finisher(maybe Damani Ralph or Fabian Taylor)

I watched the tape of the game last night and the guys (Rob, Eric, Lorrie) were saying that Roy was supposed to be at the game and be in the booth, and wanted to be there for his friend Jason, but he didn't make it to the stadium. They didn't say why, but they made it sound mysterious. Does anyone know why he didn't go to the game? Was he arrested? ;)
I miss Roy always being offside, then BAM, in on goal alone. We are hardly ever offside any more, I hate that. Big forward my butt, we need a guy who runs toward goal and gets inside the box....

If I had a choice between Gerd Müller or Rudi Völler, I'd choose Gerd Müller every time.
Garbage goals count the exact same value as pretty ones.

Well, at least Lassiter didn't have to die to get some belated credit from MLS fans. Also, consider the fact that he was already in his mid-twenties when MLS kicked off. He was a leading scorer for Alajuela in Costa Rica before he played in MLS.
I wonder how many total goals he has in his career.

Just because this struck me as an odd suggestion - I looked ... the numbers are almost identical between Alecko and Fabian Taylor. If anything they favor Eskandarian. They both have 4 goals, two of Esky's were game winners, only one of Taylor's was. Taylor has 23 shots, 11 on goal - Esky has 24 shots, 13 on goal plus Alecko takes free kicks and does other things. They have comparable minutes.
Now Damani, he blows them both away ;)

when MLS first started i was only about 9 or 10 years old so i dont remember actually watching Lassiter. Besides the fact of scoring goals, could he dribble well/ take on people and pass well or was he just a plain finisher?
