England drama has 2 american fans - NY times

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/27/sports/soccer/27kick.early.html

No big surprise that tennis players, the most international of atheletes, my second favorite sport can appreciate the beautiful game. It does annoy me that serena wore cemeroon jerseys at the french, now suppports england. Where's the love for the U.S.?

Where's the love for the U.S.?Don't worry, now that she's a Nike girl, it's a matter of time before she's pimping Freddy, Landon and DeMarcus.

"Under-23 sweeper Shavar Thomas also could be considered."
Shavar is 24. He came out of the Wizards-Quakes game last night with an injury, but it's good to see he's being considered. He's been great all year.

Newbies? Shoot, I could name you ten veterans who don't make that much sense on a daily basis here.

Jerry Trecker is a former Courant staff writer who retired June 1. He will contribute occasional columns looking at international soccer.

i hadn't caught that he had retired... been wondering why i hadn't seen anything from him in awhile

for those that don't know... i'm pretty sure he covered soccer for right around 50 years in the states (among other things of course)
