Just checking. I know that Oliver says they won't be on FSW, but I heard ESPN bought the rights.

Any news or links?

I did some searching for you based on our earlier conversations on this topic. I could not find anything about anywhere where the games would be shown, however, the fixture list for the Eredivisie is not due out until July 5. So maybe something will be made known at that time, when some sort of a schedule is also drawn up.

ESPN International had the rights to Dutch Football in the past 2 seasons in Latin America and Oceania ONLY. That contract has expired.

ESPN International no longer needs Dutch Football in either Latin America and Oceania now that it has the rights to Spanish, Italian, and Scottish Football in these areas.

--

Even if ESPN were to buy US TV rights to Dutch Football (unlikely to happen), it will air in the US only on ESPN Deportes and ESPN Broadband (premium cable internet video-on-demand).

Dutch Football will NEVER air on ESPN2 in the US again. NEVER. Not now, not a year from now, not 5 years from now, not 10 years from now.

ESPN2 loses at least $80000 worth of advertising slots each time is has to air international soccer match such as UEFA Champions League.

The only reason why UEFA Champions League is still on ESPN2 13 times a year is because ESPN Deportes and ESPN Broadband don't reach enough homes to satisfy a contract stupulation requiring UEFA Champions League to be available on a non-pay-per-view channel that clears a minimum number of homes (the requirement is believed to be somewhere above 40 million).

I have a report out of Holland that ESPN did buy the North American rights. The guy works for the Eredivisie, so I'm guessing he's in the know. He's going to check on some details for me and get back to me next week.

I can't see why ANYONE would bother with Eredivisie?

How does it fill any time-slots for ESPN Deportes? They could air plenty of other stuff at those times- NBA on Fridays, MLB on Sundays (already there) and so on....

BTW, who offers ESPN Broadband? How do I know whether I get it?

Your friend is correct.

ESPN International has signed a new deal for the rights to the Eredivisie that covers the US and Canada in addition to Latin America and Oceania.

Dutch Football will air on ESPN Deportes each Sunday afternoon starting August 15 via same-day delay at 12noon ET and again at 5:30pm ET.

Can we get Deportes on Directv?

Not yet. Contract isn't done.

Even if a contract is done (within the next 12 months), ESPN Deportes will probably be available on DirecTV Para Todos only.

As for the UEFA CL games on ESPN Deportes: those games will also be available in the upcoming season on a yet-to-be-launched English-language premium channel for $12.99 a month. Stay tuned...

Para Todos: That's like an extra $9 a month for a bunch of channels?

Is this the Setanta domestic channel?

Para Todos: That's like an extra $9 a month for a bunch of channels?I thought it was a separate dish. And I thought that was ruled illegal recently. But I guess there won't be a way to get the Para Todos package with the Total Choice Premier package, huh? What I really am asking is for someone to do my research for me :)

Thx,

Jay!

Found this on a cached version of Setanta's website from during the Rugby World Cup...

Setanta's Residential Channel

Later this year Setanta intends to launch a residential channel focusing on affordable presentations of soccer and rugby. Both live and delayed games will be available. It will cost roughly $20 per month, or be part of a Sportpack, much as Fox Sports World is. This should greatly increase the availability of rugby in North America and, hopefully, make the hard core rugby fan very happy...

...I'm looking forward to this. Anyone know more details?

I switched to Para Todos just by calling them up and telling them I wanted to switch. I had to give up a few channels, BBC America, CNBC, and a few others, but I didn't mind. The cost is roughly the same. I might even have saved a few bucks.

Setanta announced that May 2003 and said they expected to have it available by the 1st Quarter of 2004. As you can see that hasn't happened.

Those things always take forever to pan out. Remember ESPN Deportes itself? Announce Sep 2002 to start Sep 2003, launched Jan 2004 and still not available to most people as of July 2004.

This is my prediction on the EreDivisie on 5/12/04:

http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2502918#post2502918

ESPN International has a long history of showing the EreDivisie. They have shown it either last season or the season before. Whenever ESPN International gets EreDivisie, expect the games would be simulcasted on ESPN Deportes.

This is Oliver's response to my prediction:

Not true.

ESPN Int'l chose NOT to acquire US and Canadian TV rights to Dutch Eredivisie or Spanish Primera (La Liga) when those were offered to ESPN Int'l.

ESPN Int'l contract with the Dutch Eredivisie for Latin America and Oceania expires in 2 weeks. The deal was signed 2 years ago as a stop-gap measure when ESPN Int'l lost the rights to Serie A in Oceania. Now that ESPN Int'l has rights to Serie A, La Liga, and Scottish Football in Latin America and Oceania, it no longer needs Dutch Eredivisie.

For some reason, 2003-04 is a down season for Oliver as far as predicting European league coverages in the Americas, let it be USA or Latin America...
