Kevin Payne talked about the trialists coming in at the half on the Rhinos radio station. I didnt catch who he said... I THINK one is the Uruguayan and he was stated as the first choice.

Could one of these guys be someone from a European club that needed to be cut because of cost?

tmas brings up a good point. what if these players aren't playing in their respective countries? maybe they are in europe, or even mexico?

Is Carrieri being considered at all.

I'm sure he's been considered, but his qualities are not those that United is in short supply of. Pardon the pun.

I split this out from DCU's thread. Maybe this could be the place for news and reliable rumor.

That post of mine is traveling like a Boo Wevil... But I am glad it has found a home. :D
--In all seriousness, I believe Kevin Payne discussed in some detail the forward trialists (and one player targeted in particular) during the halftime show of the Rhinos game on the radio. Did anyone else hear this? Can they repeat what was said here? I only heard some of it while I was stuck on the phone... not listening to the person I was talking to :D

Yeah, I knew it needed its own thread, but I had trouble figuring out which one. :D
So did KP mention any names or clubs? If the Dallas fans can track down the Burn's new name I'd like to think the DC fans can track down these guys.

I dont recall KP saying any names... I believe he said that was still under wraps. But I believe he did mention the Uruguayan as the front runner. (I can't believe I am the only "source" for this... Someone had to have been paying better attention!)
For what its worth, the announcers also asked him about Rimando and if he was trade bait or soon to be cut and KP quickly dodged the issue and actually defended Nick and his value to the team... (This of course probably means Nick is packing as we speak :D )

Okay, here is what I remeber from the broadcast last night......don't know how much it will help.
Payne said they are considering three players.
Two of which are younger, are 'proven goalscorers' and would be available on a free transfer (not under contract now). I don't remember (although I'm sure he did say) what their nationalities were.
Then he talked about a 31 year old player who would 'help the club in a number of ways', but he said something to the effect that he may be tougher to get. I distinctly remember the age (31) as I found that interesting. This is the guy they were looking to get first.
That is all that I can remember. I know I should have written this stuff down when he was talking..........

Thats sounds right to me.
--Just out of curiousity... did the Rhinos have a seperate broadcast team? Did some people listen to a DC team on the other station?

hmmm
Darren Anderton (released from Tottenham) and linked with a move to MLS turned 32 in March. I wonder who else this could be.

--Just out of curiousity... did the Rhinos have a seperate broadcast team? Did some people listen to a DC team on the other station?Yeah. I linked through the DC website, and it was Lizmari. I don't think it was a WMET broadcast, just something he was doing for the team/web. In the AOL chatroom, someone (Cweedchop, I think) joined later and had a quicker feed from the Rhino's home broadcasters, I guess from their local radio station. Tony just interviewed Alecko at the half. Is there a Rhino's forum we could troll for answers?
Thx,
Jay!

Considering that Payne was quoted in the original article discussing the fowards that two were Argentinian and one a Uruguayan, I think you are continents away on the Anderton guess. In addition, last time I checked, Anderton was not a forward. So, indeed, one does wonder who else this could be.
What we know: 2 Argentinians and 1 Uruguayan; one of these is 31 yrs old; each is a forward, possibly all big target forward types; two of them are out of contract; the 31-yr old may be tougher to get (which could mean he's the one in contract).
I looked through the Uruguayan rosters from 2002 WCQ and the 2002 WC and found only one listed forward who would be 31 years old now: Dario Silva. He's with Malaga of Spain, at last report, and is a relatively short guy, being 5'8" (175 cm). I remember him and recall him playing wide at times. I think he's the guy who burned Tony Sanneh repeatedly as a left wing/forward in a friendly prior to the WC. If you take Payne's quote about helping the team in a number of ways to mean that the 31-yr old would not be a traditional tall target forward, then this could be the guy.
Relatedly, Abreu is 27 now and Morales (the other target forward for Uruguay in the WC) is 29 going on 30.
Hence, I'm leaning towards the 31 yr old being Argentinian.
I'll take a look through some Argentinian resources soon.
Cheers,
Tim

Anyone heard anything reliable about Nick wanting out or DCU wanting him out, beyond speculation?

Here are a few Argentinian forwards who are 31 yr old and we might be able to acquire:
Juan Eduardo Esnáider Belén -- tall guy out of contract from Real Murcia (Spain).
Marcelo Alejandro Delgado -- short guy (5/9") on good form at Cruz Azul (Mex).
Cheers,
Tim
