That's exactly how I would've picked my Top 100.

I'm not quite sure if I agree with the idea of bunching soundtracks with musical numbers, and with lists like this, you're always going to have voters picking different criterias. Not a bad list though. Very, very disappointed that Curtis Mayfield wasn't even considered for his work on Superfly. I do wish Elliott Smith's "Miss Misery" and the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind" had made the Top 400, but that's probably because I like both artists.

My Top 5:
"As Time Goes By"
"Old Man River"
"Mrs. Robinson"
"Stayin Alive"
"America"

I like "You'll Never Walk Alone", but not because of its use in a film.

Oh, brother! Somebody just had to started a thread about this...

Okay, give me a little time to sort through it all, because I haven't got the time right now for a project like this. The Voice Of God on such matters will definately be back to you.

Let me simply mention right now that a good deal of these songs are from the stage and I don't consider them movie songs. So I'll give you "pure" movie songs, stage songs done on film, and maybe even a contemporary list of fairly recent tripe so you all will know that I have a little bit of the Philistine in me.

:D

By the way, "As Time Goes By" is not originally a movie song, it is a stage song.

And if I hear "You'll Never Walk Alone" done outside of the context of Carousel one more time, I'm going to scream. I know it's the club song of three or four European clubs (maybe more), but I'm sick of it.

Stay tuned...

Its popularity has little to do with the original musical or the film adaptation though - its cult status all started with the cover by Gerry & the Pacemakers.

What!!?? This I gotta hear!

And I thought the Beatles doing "Till There Was You" from The Music Man took the cake.

Yep, it's true. Gerry & the Pacemakers' cover of YNWA was a #1 hit in UK in 1963 or thereabouts, and it wasn't uncommon for supporters in England to sing the pop song du jour. It's just that YNWA ended up sticking around while other songs didn't, partly because of Gerry Marsden's Merseyside roots and mostly because of the lyrics' application to soccer.

It is a travesty that We'll Meet Again from Dr. Strangelove was not only not in the top five musical moments of all time, but not even listed in the top 400.

Simply amazing that this omission went undetected by the voters.

Another glaring omission is The Bare Necessities from the Jungle Book.

Now there's plenty of other songs that I think should have made the list, but these two in particular make the list completely and utterly void of any credibillity.

"The Bare Necessities" is on the 400 list. The Sherman Brothers shouldn't push their luck believng they should be in the top 100.

(I think the The Jungle Book is a decent amount of fun, by the way.)

What you've all been waiting for. I had to make it a Top 25, since there are so many damn great ones. There are some glaring omissions from the 400 list, so I've taken liberties to include a few missing songs.

Top 25 ORIGINAL Movie Songs:

1. Cheek to Cheek Top Hat; 1935
2. The Way You Look Tonight Swing Time; 1936
3. Mona Lisa Captain Carey, U.S.A.; 1950
4. Over the Rainbow The Wizard of Oz; 1939
5. The Continental The Gay Divorcee; 1934
6. In the Still of the Night Rosalie; 1937 (not on the list!!!)
7. Isn't It Romantic Love Me Tonight; 1932
8. Stepping Out with My Baby Easter Parade; 1948
9. The Trolley Song Meet Me in St Louis; 1944
10. Forty-Second Street 42nd Street; 1933
11. On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe The Harvey Girls; 1946
12. Long Ago and Far Away Cover Girl; 1944
13. I've Got You Under My Skin Born To Dance; 1936
14. Pick Yourself Up Swing Time; 1936 (not on the list!)
15. When You Wish Upon a Star Pinocchio; 1940
16. In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening Here Comes the Groom; 1951
17. Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate the Positive Here Come the Waves; 1944
18. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Meet Me in St. Louis; 1944
19. Lullaby of Broadway Gold Diggers of 1935; 1935
20. Chattanooga Choo-Choo Sun Valley Serenade; 1941
21. Temptation Going Hollywood; 1933 (not on the list)
22. That's Entertainment The Band Wagon; 1953
23. White Christmas Holiday Inn; 1942
24. The Carioca Flying Down to Rio; 1933
25. The Donkey Serenade The Firefly; 1937

"As Time Goes By" is from the 1931 Broadway musical Everybody's Welcome. It was written by Herman Hupfeld. If it had fit my criteria of being written specifically for a movie, I would definately have it on the list.

"Singin' in the Rain" was written for Hollywood Revue of 1929, and subsequently appeared in Speak Easily and Little Nellie Kelly (not to mention, eventually, A Clockwork Orange), before gaining immortality. It didn't make my cut. So sue me.

I cannot verify "Nature Boy" being written specifically for the film The Boy with Green Hair. If it was, it belongs on the list.

A shocking number of terrific songs weren't on the 400 list. Here are some, in alphabetical order: Dearly Beloved You Were Never Lovelier; Happy Days Are Here Again Chasing Rainbows; I Remember You The Fleet's In; I Won't Dance Roberta; I'm in the Mood for Love Every Night at Eight; I'm Old Fashioned You Were Never Lovelier; It's A Grand Night for Singing State Fair; It's A Great Day for the Irish Little Nellie Kelly; I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm On the Avenue; Let's Face the Music and Dance Follow the Fleet; Let's Fall in Love Let's Fall in Love; Lover Love Me Tonight; Tangerine The Fleet's In; They All Laughed Shall We Dance; You Stepped Out of A Dream Ziegfeld Girl.

So lemme get this straight...your criteria for the list is a song that was from a movie before 1952 and had to be written only for that movie? Interesting, but not at all what the thread (or the AFI list) is about.

So lemme get this straight...your criteria for the list is a song that was from a movie before 1952 and had to be written only for that movie? Interesting, but not at all what the thread (or the AFI list) is about.

First of all, I put no date requirement on the songs I went through. It just so happens movie songs were an embassment of riches at one time, and are now simply an embarrassment. Moreover, after fifty years, one can see what has survived the test of time and has lasting value. The list I presented is sterling.

Secondly, the easiest thing I could have done is pick "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific or "The Rain in Spain" from My Fair Lady or "Tonight" from West Side Story, etc. But those are not movie songs, they are stage songs. The fact that "As Time Goes By" happened to come from a flop show which nobody's ever heard of doesn't exempt it, although I suppose an argument could be made concerning the fact it was used in a wholly different story and context. I'd be willing to listen to that line of thought.

Listing numbers such as "La Bamba" or "Tequila" is absolutely dumb. They are not movie songs, period. And "Amazing Grace" being on the list? Come on, now.

Also, for the AFI to list "Puttin' on the Ritz" as being from Young Frankenstein and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" from American Graffiti is an outrage beyond belief. Of course, they did it because plenty of jerks out there only know those songs from those pictures, but it's disregarding the origins of those songs. Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern didn't write those songs for the purposes of those pictures, although I'm sure they wouldn't object to a new audience being exposed to them. But the first version is the one which should be honored. ("Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" shouldn't even be eligible. It's a theatre piece.)

You mention the purpose of the AFI's list or this thread. As far as the AFI is concerned, I know their kissing the ass of baby-boomers by playing up stuff like American Graffiti and The Big Chill, movies which use oldies pop songs as a soundtrack, since so many of you get carried away and feel some sort of strong identification with those pictures. They define you or reflect something--youthful nostalgia maybe--that eludes my thinking. But, artistically speaking, I've always thought it was a cop-out for movies like those to sentimentally milk the emotions of their audiences by taking the easy way out and loading up the soundtrack with number one hits of a certain era. Why didn't they write an entirely new score? I'll tell you why. Because it's as difficult as hell to write a score which can sum up an era or elict the emotions of a different time. They don't have the talent around to pull it off. So they send you down a musical memory lane and you think you've seen the greatest movie ever made. Actually, they're glorified music videos.

And as to the purpose of this thread, I didn't start it but I hope it is to discuss this stuff. Maybe you think it's only about "the list" and anyone deviating from the AFI-approved party line should keep quiet. Well, I think it's about our interpretations and opinions of "the list."

Here's a breakdown of the top 100 by decade:

1930s ------- 11
1940s ------- 14
1950s ------- 17
1960s ------- 20
1970s ------- 16
1980s ------- 13
1990s ------- 6
2000s ------- 2

I would have expected the 30s-50s to outscore the 60s-80s, but the earlier decades lost 49-42. That over one-third of the songs came from the 60s and 70s would seem to indicate most of the voters were Boomers, stuck in their own era.

What people consider classics changes over time. Had the list been made by pre-Boomers in 1984 I'd have expected to see almost nothing from the 70s and no more than 10 songs from the 60s - different voters with different perspectives.

However, I really doubt the 80s and 90s will do much better a decade from now. I can't imagine songs from those years ever winning one-third of the list.

But just what is a "movie song?" Some of these were sung by actors and were an integral part of the film, others (e.g. "Raindrops" in "Butch Cassidy") were sung by singers who never appeared on the screen (i.e., background music), and still others (e.g., "Goldfinger") were primarily title music. I tend to think it should be limited to the first category, which would greatly reduce the list.

Where on Earth is Wang Chung's "To Live and Die in L.A.?" I mean, it didn't even make the top 400!!!!! Need I say, "Travesty?!?!"

And how on earth did "We Don't Need Another Hero" miss the cut?

The funny thing is that I was talking to my girlfriend the other night, and she was talking about visiting the Biosphere in Arizona ...... and I told her the Biosphere was a project run by a bunch of hippies sitting around, smoking pot, listening to Hair and taking each other's pulse ... And I start serenading her with an Aquarius/Good MOrning Starshine medley .... So Tuesday night, she comes bounding onto the Internet, I IM her and she says, :"Oh we're looking up the top 100 movie songs. And boom there's Aquarius. We got a laugh out of that.

SO where is Jesus Christ Superstar, anyway?

But how have you seen so many old musicals?

It's not a case of necessarily having seen everything. Some of these movies are difficult to track down. It's more a case of being aware that this stuff is out there and over the course of the years exposing one's self to it when the opportunity presents itself.

Recordings of these films soundtracks are just as valuable if you simply want to listen to the songs being done in their originally intended way. God knows some of these pictures are difficult to sit through when the musical numbers aren't taking place.

A lot of old movie soundtracks are being cleaned up and offered now. Rhino is doing fine work with the Turner Classic Movies/MGM catalog, which includes Warner Brothers and RKO. And Rhino Handmade is doing an unbelieveable job over the internet with limited editions of some terrific and rare stuff.

I know the "now" dominates these music boards. I've often wondered why there are no opera threads here, or classical music ones, and even jazz doesn't turn up too frequently. I understand everybody being interested in contemporary sounds, what's new and happening today. But so many people do it at the expense of checking out the quality music from the past. It takes time and effort to know a lot about that stuff, which no doubt is one of the problems. It's not "in your face" all the time like the current music is. You have to search hard for a lot of it.

Anyway, this AFI thread, which I'm greatful for, was a chance for me to express some of my preferences and sound-off on some issues I had with the AFI list in general.

By the way, for the sake of accuracy, I meant to indicate on my Top 25 that my #25 pick, "The Donkey Serenade," was also not on the 400 list. That makes 4 out of my 25 having been overlooked by AFI.

AFI's is a list of musical moments in movies, not best songs written specifically for a movie.

Puttin' On The Ritz from Young Frankenstein is, if anything, underrated.

I won't agrue your case that songs may have been better back in the day - because i don't want to - I don't care. But the list isn't about best songs that appeared originally in a movie. It's about musical moments.

Close. It's actually what you call "ignorant of the situation."

See, he didn't bother to read what the AFI list was compiled for and instead argued that it's wrong because he would have made the list on different criteria. Of course, he didn't bother to tell you that because he was unaware that the list was actually a list of 100 greatest songs that created musical moments, instead of best songs that came originally from movies. - in which case I would never have stepped in and replied to his post, as I can agree with most of his points.
