United President Kevin Payne said yesterday that the club is pursuing two Argentines and an Uruguayan as a possible replacement. Payne wouldn't identify them, citing the sensitivity of the search, but said he hopes to bring them to Washington for workouts in the coming weeks.
"They're all proven goal scorers," he said. "Two of them are pure strikers and the other one is a unique player who we think could help us a lot."

The only thing that concerns me about this is that part about "coming to Washington for tryouts in the coming weeks."
I'm afraid to see just how much more of the season is going to get away before a player of any substance is acquired. I'm not against going abroad to get the player the club needs, I just wonder if there isn't an option closer to home that can be brought in in a more immediate fashion.

Lanky, I posted on the "Who should we sign?" thread that Ken Wright named Froylan Ledesma as a possible player United is interested in. He's a Costa Rican midfielder/forward that used to play for The Strongest. That is the only reason I'm familair with him. That being said, he's a true badass. Much in the Tyson Nuņez mold but bigger and better ball skills. He is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered for United. Not sure if the economics will work out but if we sign him, he will definately move in and make his presence felt.

I don't care who the forwards are as long as they understand that BALL must GO UNDER CROSSBAR, PAST the Keeper and inbetween the Two Posts..

Wasn't Earnie Stewart described as "a unique player who we think could help us a lot"?

One item I left out of this story: Payne said the club has no interest at this time in going after any Costa Ricans, and that he doesn't know where such rumors were started or why they ended up in print without any attribution.
If the team is unable to sign any of the three players on their wish list, they will then look elsewhere, perhaps Central America.

Makes me think someone in DC's front office is pulling Wright's chain just a wee bit.
Good for them.

Damn, that's too bad cause Ledesma would be a great fit for United. Oh well, given their track record it doesn't surprise me. Hopefully "elsewhere" means "anywhere".

Hmm, whats the success rate on SI goal scorers in MLS? Seems like young up and coming guys from within CONCACAF have done better of late in the league than SA or Euro ones. Its strange, but Id almost feel better hearing my team linked to a young striker for St. Kitts and Nevis then I would over a striker from Argentina at this point. There is also the issue of cost effectiveness, youve unsaddled yourself from Cerritos's cap number, all that could be undone in one swift blow if the new guy doesnt work out.
And Im a little suprised that Alan Gordan name hasnt surfaced around United. 11 goals in 11 games in the A-League (probably already wrapped up the rookie of the Year there). Maybe a transfer isnt doable, but seems to me hes looking like hed fit your needs to a T, would be cheap, and American.
