As the most awaited press conference today in Madrid since the disasterous campaign exhibited by Spain in the Euro 2004, after falling against Portugal and getting eliminated in the first round of this competition, Saez, in the presence of Villar, the president of the Spanish Federation, has resigned from his coaching position.
"I have not completely failed. I was given the job of renovating an aging team because of my knowledge of the youth teams, and I have done it quite well. This generation of players, the youngest one in this EC, will be ready to explode in the next WC at 2006, so I have to say that I leave with a very clear conscience, knowing that I have done my job quite well. Thank you for all your support, and I hope that the seeds that I have planted give us all in two years what we failed to achieve in Portugal." Saez said. Villar, who thanked his old friend from Athletic of Bilbao for his great service, appointed him again to lead the youth teams, and wished him to do it with the success he's had in the past.
The Spanish press members congregated in the conference room exhaled with relief as Saez had finished talking, in a clear sign of approval. For what Saez or Villar had been saying in the hours prior to this announcement, it looked almost certain that Saez would just stay in the job in spite of a really bad campaign and the poorest showing of Spain in years. Villar is having elections in 4 months, and his was a very tough decision for him. If he would drop Saez, he would just admit having made another wrong choice and surely loose. On the other hand, another poor game by Spain against Venezuela in August, or Bosnia in September for the WC qualifiers, with Saez in charge, and Villar would most certainly loose his job. Villar chose to drop Saez.
However, Villar did not stop there. What nobody was expecting was Villar to announce the new Spanish coach without any time lapse, and without letting Saez even get up from the chair. The reporters could not believe their ears and gasped in surprise as Villar started to make the announcement.
"In this very sad day, after another great tragedy in the history of our sport, after another failure after high hopes and expectations, we loose a friend, Saez, who gave everything he had in the best possible faith. However, we loose a friend, but we take back another, I am very proud to announce our new national team coach, the one that we'll change our fate and take us back to the path of tryumph, to fullfill our great destiny......welcome back....Clemente!!"
As Clemente walked in the room and shook Saez's hand, a solar eclipse took place, the Mar Menor waters turn red, tons of dead fish filled the beaches of La Costa del Sol....Clemente, with a sinister grin in his face as he shook Villar's hand, and as the reporters had started to get out from their state of shock and into a more violent state of mind and words of obvious dissapproval, said "Y que ostias os pasa? a ver, a ver..."
