THE GREAT PREMIER LEAGUE 2009-10 DRAW DROUGHT

The Premier League is experiencing a very strange phenomenon at the moment -

a shortage of matches resulting in draws.

Out of the 65 Premier League games played so far during season 2009-10,

only 4 matches have resulted in draws. This is just 6.15% of the matches played.

Even stranger is the fact that none of the current Top 11 Premier League teams

have been involved in matches which have resulted in draws.

None of the 10 games played during last weekend's fixtures were drawn.

In a normal season, one would expect there to be anything from 20% to 31%

of the total matches drawn.

This draw drought hasn't been seen in other divisions of English Football as the

Championship has had 37 draws from 107 games (34.6%), League One has had

37 draws from 108 games (34.3%) and League Two has had 23 draws from 108

games (21.3%).

The Scottish Premier League has an even higher percentage of drawn matches
with 12 draws from the 36 matches played so far (33.33%).

"Sample size".

Oh - and "anomaly". "Ah-no-ma-lee".

Comparing the total figure from the full sample size to the temporary figure from the small (less than 1/5) sample size is largely meaningless. People see percentages and go "ah, that extrapolates for ever, I can make a trend now, I don't have to wait!".

But it doesn't and they can't and they do.

The thing is, even when you compare the first 66 Premier League matches last season, there were over 20 draws.

So it's not extrapolating.

It's comparing like with like.

Stoke have been involved in two of the four drawn Premier League games so far this season.

Birmingham 0-0 Stoke
Bolton 1-1 Stoke

No, it's not. What you did in going off and finding out the figure for the first 66 Premier League matches last season is comparing like with like. The original article you quoted was extrapolating.

Anyhoo, fewer draws is quite entertaining, I suppose.

The total surged by 50% in just four games yesterday. At this rate, this season will see more draws than any other season in history.

Aaaaah, statistics ...

It's the difference in goals scored which is more interesting.
