It's great that they got 37,000 out for a international match feature Mexico in San Antonio but that doesn't necessarily mean that MLS will be a success. Earlier in the year 4,200 came out to see the Metros take on the Rapids at a facility other than the Alamodome.

In order to better gage they need to have a MLS exhibition in the Alamodome and see how it does.

In other news, Major League Soccer continues to seek a way to appeal to a family demographic. Each MLS team will be allocated a circus elephant, whose salary will not count much against the cap - because they work for peanuts.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather that they play in the Alamodome -- provided that the City of San Antonio comes up with a reasonable lease deal.

Over in the attendance threads over the MLS N&A forum, you'll read plenty of reasons (which are usually valid) why a game didn't draw very well. And most of them have to do with weather or the venue. Well, the Alamodome would eliminate both of those factors. You never have to worry that the weather is too hot or too cold or that it was raining or that it had just rained or that it was threatening to rain -- it's always 72-74 degrees inside and dry. And the Alamodome is a first rate venue with all the amenities that fans like. We're certainly not talking about a Dragon Stadium or Cotton Bowl or RFK Stadium situation here. Finally, with all the threads talking about how this new stadium or that one needs a roof to help the atmosphere, think about how the atmosphere can be in a stadium with a full roof.

The two downsides of course are the size and the field. The size makes things more difficult in selling tickets, but I think that we've gotten so obsessed with the 20,000 seat facilities that we've forgotten that teams can grown their attendance and have grown their attendance in large facilities. The Burn was doing in the pre-Southlake years and the Wizards are doing it now.

As for the field, it'll definitely be FieldTurf or a similar product, which is a minus. However, many problems that MLS has experienced with artificial turf have been related to how they react to heat and direct sunlight. Put FieldTurf outside in 85-90 degree heat and it gets really damn hot and uncomfortable for players. None of that is the case inside the Alamodome. That being said, it's still harder than grass and plays differently than grass, so it still probably wouldn't be the favorite field of the players in the league.

Still, I think that if the City of San Antonio offers a good lease deal to the league, it would be a very fan-friendly place to play and I think that you would be hard-pressed to build a soccer-specific facility with the same level of fan amenities without spending a lot of money.

That's not to be confused with Arsenal's "Gooners" of course. I think you could make an argument for that because I think that one of the cops on the beach near the end of the movie says "it's them Gooners!". ;)
