Um..Argentinos are as White as Latinos can get. And just because they are from Argentina doesnt make them "latinos". There are many European decendents in South AMerica. I should know, Im Brazilian Born with a German last name. Argentina is know as the Europe of South America.

You just defined the meaning of the word Latino. WHich is being from a latin country.

There are many European decendents in South AMerica.
Yeah no shite guess where "Latins" came from? Not Antartica! Europe silly!

Good for you. I was also born in South America. Nice to meet you neighbor.

For the record when you talk about "white" you talk about caucasians. Italians and Spanish aren't "white". The only white people in Arg are German and Poles. But they are still a minority.

Based on your theory then BLACKS dont exist in South America because they are exclusively Latinos and thats totally wrong. A good portion of Brazil is Black. A good portion of Brazil is also White. Meanwhile they all can be Latino for simply being from S.A.

And "latino's" can be white. Just because you were born in a Latin American country does not disqualify you of being white. Go to an Encyclopedia and look at each south american country population info. You will see that they will be classified as "WHITE", "BLACKS" etc... The term LATINO and WHITE are not conflicting.

Well Metro, I think that the people that wrote the term "White man can't jump" weren't thinking so deeply into it like you. Im sure they look at that Argentina team and say "Yeah they are WHITE".

Those Were WHITE men that beat the US tonight.

Dude, I'm 100% Italian and I always check the "white" box on forms. "White" is a race, "Italian" is an ethnicity. One can be both Italian and "white" (caucasian), in fact 99% of Italians are white. Hispanic is also an ethnicity, not a race. A large portion of Hispanics are white, and a large portion (particularly in South America) are black.

On a lot of forms, the options are as follows

- Non-Hispanic white
- Non-Hispanic black
- Hispanic
- Native American
- Asian or Pacific Islander

This leads me to believe that a Hispanic (or Latino) and black/white are not mutually exclusive.

I believe that anthropologically(sp?) that there are three races Caucasian, African, and Asian. Also I believe that Native Americans are considered Asian. So, a lot of hispanics are a mix of Asian and Caucasian. But many others are one or the other. This is why the have the "Caucasian-Non hispanic" box on forms. Many latinos are Caucasian, but for cultural reasons they are considered a different ethnicity.

Anthropologists and biologists (well, the vast majority of them anyway) don't use race as it's being discussed here as a model for describing human biological variation anymore. It doesn't do the job. Check out this, as just one example among many.

The Emperor's new clothes : biological theories of race at the millennium /
Authors: Graves, Joseph L., 1955-
Published: New Brunswick, N.J. : Rutgers University Press, c2001.

Now, if we're talking about race as a cultural construction, I'd have to say it's pretty weird to hear that Italians aren't White. My grandmother would be pissed.

Italian with a last name like McCracken??? Please enlighten me ;)

Anyways, I had a friend growing up who was red haired and freckled but since he had a spanish last name, he was considered a Minority.

On a related note, I find it rather amusing that Indians (from the Country India) and people of middle eastern descent (like me) are considered caucasians. But Hispanics are not. Not that I really care, but it is head scratching.

I guess that's why I'm not a biologist or anthropologist. I use antiquated theories. ;)

I too used to play with very light skinned, red hair, Jewish, rich mexicans. I'm glad I did too, because it helped me learn that not all sterotypes are true.
