Group C
German referee Markus Merk will take charge of the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI showdown between Scandinavian rivals Denmark and Sweden on Tuesday. The other Group C match that night, between Italy and Bulgaria at the Estádio Afonso D. Henriques in Guimarães, will be refereed by Russian Valentin Ivanov.

Group D
In Group D, finally, Norway's Terje Hauge will take charge of Wednesday’s match between Germany and the Czech Republic at Lisbon's Estádio José Alvalade. Danish referee Kim Milton Nielsen has been assigned the Netherlands-Latvia match at the Estádio Municipal de Braga.

This not matching up. Markus Merk, a German, gets to referee DEN v SWE, the game that the group C winners will come from. Meanwhile, Germany only has a shot at qualifying in second place in group D, so Denmark/Sweden are potential opponents of Germany in quarterfinals. And how about Kim Milton Nielsen, Danish, picking Denmark's probable rivals out of Netherland or Latvia? If Denmark win group C the day before he just might have a slight inclination to help Latvia, even if he doesn't mean to.
