And a big congrats to him for yesterday! :)

Australian cyclist Cadel Evans wins world road race championship (http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/australian-cyclist-cadel-evans-wins-world-road-race-championship/story-e6frexni-1225780273234)

CADEL Evans fought back tears after answering his knockers with a storming victory to become Australia's first cycling road race world champion today.

The gritty Australian shed some more of his Tour de France frustrations as he blew his rivals away with a solo break at the foot of the final climb to claim the coveted rainbow jersey in the 262.2km race in Switzerland.

"It's an answer to those criticisms that I've had, saying I never attack," said an emotional Evans, who lives just a few kilometres from the finish line in Mendrisio.

"The world's been telling me for years I can't win big races, can't win one day races, because my job is to win stage races, and then today I come out and win the world championship, I don't quite believe it."

Evans did well to join a nine-man breakaway led by time trial champion and Swiss favourite Fabian Cancellara and then launched his own attack at the foot of the Novazzano climb in the closing stages to win in six hours, 56 minutes and 26 seconds.

Russian Alexandr Kolobnev took silver and Joaquin Rodriguez of Spain finished third, both 27 seconds behind Evans whose compatriot Simon Gerrans was 10th.

As he powered his way up the final climb, Kolobnev and Rodriguez were slow to respond.

Evans benefited from their hesitation and the fact race favourites Alejandro Valverde of Spain and Italy's Damiano Cunego were further back marking each other with Cancellara.

Valverde finished nearly a minute off the pace, as did Cunego, who praised Evans.

"I think he answered all those people who say he can't win. I am happy for him," Cunego said.

"Best current rider"?

I'd argue that victory puts him ahead of Phil Anderson as Australia's greatest EVER cyclist. I don't think anyone within cycling would begrudge him that victory, hats off to him. Thank God it was Cadel and not Valverde or even Vino.

Australia's world road race cycling champion Cadel Evans has signed a three-year deal with the American team BMC.

Evans, a two-time runner-up on the Tour de France in 2007 and 2008, will leave the Belgian Silence-Lotto team at the end of the year despite having a year on his current deal to run.

BMC said in a statement: "The BMC Racing Team today announced the signing of current world road race champion Cadel Evans to a three year contract. This partnership will create mutually beneficial opportunities for both the current World Champion as well as the BMC Racing Team."

The signing of Evans will be considered a coup for BMC, who have been operating in cycling's second tier Continental Pro ranks.

His presence means the team can now look forward to being invited to many of the top races on the calendar, for which Pro Tour status is usually required.

i think my views of Cadel are well known in these parts. i am really disappointed to have him go to BMC. not because he is leaving Silence and not because i believe he actually has a better chance of TdF yellow but that Big George will be his super domestique. that really angers me. why does the most humble man in the sport have to ride for Cuddles? i think that BMC will be a great suit for Cadel and the rest of the big names but why does George have to go? my TCH squad is crumbling down...

Watching Highroad go south isn't very much fun. I was becoming a big fan after this last TdF. Now, no more Hincapie (and possible Cavendish) sucks. :o
