I've recently had some time to play FIFA 2004. What does everyone thing of it? There are a few things that I really like and a few others that annoy me. I love being able to do off the ball runs. But I'm confused as to what they thought when they created throw ins where you can do nothing for the most part other than a long throw back to a defender.

Huh? Throw ins work fine for me-i've set up a couple goals from throw ins. Playing on harder modes takes time to get used to but its a lot more rewarding. I played on semipro for a month and got really bored because i was scoring seven or eight goals a match. Pro is getting pretty easy now so i might move on to world class soon.

I haven't used the OTB feature though, but i heard it is pretty useful for setting up stuff.

Some complaints- 1) Not enough tricks/individual flair. I would've liked to emulate the craziness of C. Ronaldo or Zidane's trademark turns (they do have the spin move though dunno what its called). I understand that Fifa wanted to put an emphasis on passing, but it's still dissapointing. Apparently they added more tricks in Euro 2004 so i guess we'll be seeing more individual abilities in Fifa 05.
2) No creation center. This really ticked me off. There was nothing like plugging yourself into the game and playing for the biggest clubs. They released a stand-alone creation center a while ago, but apparently if you do that, it totally screws up the career mode and you have to stick with friendlies and tournaments, which to me just spoils the whole thing.

Its a great game though. I heard the Winning Eleven series is better, but too bad they don't release anything for PC.

I have WE7 for the PS2 and I must say it's gameplay is much better than FIFA's. The only problem with it it the lack of licensing for team names and player names. It is a really tough game too. I've been playing it for 2 weeks now at the 2 star level (5 is hardest) and I get my butt kicked. Lots of fun.

I have to say the best thing about FIFA 2004 is clumanager mode where you can take your team up through the divisions as well as sign and release players. I wish they would bring back the create player/team/kit mode that was in 2002 instead of having to pay for a damn expansion pack.

Roger, for some tips on how to better your play for WE check out pesinsight.com

Its mostly a bunch of Brits that are obsessed with the game. Their tips really helped me improve. I'm at the point where I'm pretty competitive at 3 star difficulty, but I can kill the comp on 2 star, usually a 7-0 or 6-1 scoreline. I've beaten the comp on 5 star playing with Brazil against South Africa, but it was a real battle. Anyway, check out pesinsight for more info on the game.

haveing played both fifa rtwc98 through to 2004,and pes2(on the ps1) through to pes3 on the ps2,their is just no comparsion.pro evoultion soccer3 is total football,i.e,handballs, refs playing advantage, haveing a proper transfer system were you cant just go out and buy any player at will but haveing to put in bid's getting turned down other clubs trying to buy your best players.and a game play system that is perfect, without any of these stupid arrows and lines when you get a set piece that come as standard with any fifa game.
lets be honest here since fifa rtwc98,fifa games have used exactly the same game engine, and only consintrated on pretty graphics.

end of the day fifa is only a money makeing enterprize, which churns out the same game year after year,pes3(or we outside europe),is a game made by football fans for football fans by a special devolpment team at konami, that make an effort to re-produce the reality of moderen day football,in a way that all serious football fans and gamers can enjoy.

do yourself a favour and trade in your copy of fifa and get a proper football game......

I just recently rented FIFA 2004 and for me the only gratifying thing was being able to play as my favorite team. Outside of that I would say it is not worth buying. I also bought WE7 and overall it is better. I do have to say I like how EA set up the corner kicks where you can set up plays. I have played both games on their easiest levels. WE7 was an actual challenge, which shows that you have to learn the controls. While FIFA I was beating teams even or better than mine by five or more goals easily. Right now I am waiting for option files to come out for WE7 so that I can play with the real players. I really wish EA would realize they have something there with the licensing and to not just sit on that fact.

Any tips? I swear I didn't find squat in the booklet. Do I have to set up some plays in another area before starting a game?

Well I just grabbed WE7 for my PC. I'm going to play it tonight after work. I've read about files available online to get the proper rosters loaded. I only used the PS2 for WE7 so I traded it in since WE7 is out for my PC. I'm a Gamecube fan.

This may be a stupid or obvious question, but I recently purchased FIFA 2004 and I can't figure out how to have a World Cup-type tournament with the International teams. Any help is much appreciated...

FIFA'04 is a step down from FIFA'03 on XBOX IMHO. Little things like using R-trigger to send a teammate on a forward run was dropped. Now its all about white button then R-thumbstick for OTB runs.
I still play FIFA'99 from N64. For my money that Arcade version is where EA peaked. The ability to alter game speeds is sorely missed in the most recent editions. Of course the graphics are a light year behind, but on Stadium Cam it doesn't matter cuz its all about the kits. just how soccer teams are known and loved for anyway. Why EA departed from higher speed play if desired is beyond me. Sometimes the counter attack on '03/'04 is more like a counter "we'll get to the attacking 1/3 any day now coach" attack. FK's have come along way however. Putting english on the dead ball is a delightful challenge. Here's to EA making '05 a return to Arcade gameplay.

Howdy

Oh yeah...going behind 3-0 to an English side on '04 and their crowd will taunt you with the old chant threeeeee nil, three nil threee nil....three nill...repeat!
First time I heard that I thought I was hearing sh!t in my head.

No not a stupid question. I've had the game since its release and I don't think there is a tournament of that nature. Also does anyone know why the Nike Teams don't have the nike swoosh on their kits?

Apparently there is an expansion pack with more stadiums, jerseys, and torunaments. FIFA 2002 had many tourneys as well as 2003 (the best in my opinion). The new one will probably have them if not you'll have to create them ( I created WC for 2002 since it wasn't an option) since they are bringing back creation centre.

Thanks for your help with my question, and welcome to Big Soccer! I would assume it probably comes down to permission from Nike and/or licensing fees that EA would have to pay.

A number of goals have resulted from a throw in the opposing half to an open player, shrugging off any defenders, and lobbing to the edge of the box. I play with 3 players up front, and they're all very fast so they can usually get the ball for a header or shot.

Don't throw directly at your player though, cause the defender can get it. Throw slightly away from your player so that he can get to it faster than his marker.

Hmm if WE7 is on PC, I definately need to check it out
