It is clear that Mexico is unrivaled, by far the strongest league beyond all doubt even though its teams have largely fielded bench warmers, reserve squads & debutants.

Then the fight for the 2nd Tier is pretty close between USA, Honduras & Panama with the edge going to USA for its edge on depth.

In the middle of the pack... Costa Rica, which used to be the 2nd best league & a mini CONCACAF power, is certainly the disappointment of the tournament. In the mid pack we also see T&T growing by leaps & bounds.

At the bottom... El Salvador is like our very own Peru & Guatemala is the CONCACAF version of Bolivia. Very disappointing.


Its hard to know if Mexico is just improving at an exponentially faster rate than its previous rivals who gave it trouble... Costa Rica, USA, Honduras... or was it that the differences always existed but the Home & Away, and greater importance vs. prior CONCACAF Club Tournaments has the Mexican teams actually caring?

Other than Mexico, Panama and T&T are the fastest improving leagues.

Assessment after Group Phase...



Mexico is in a league of its own
Honduras surpassed USA as the 2nd best performer in the region
Panama's young league continues to make strides, as does T&T which is growing by leaps & bounds getting very close to its first 2nd Round appearance
Puerto Rico proved to be a fluke (as did Montreal)
Guatemala surpassed the disappointing Costa Ricans
El Salvador is clearly the worst league but they salvaged some honor by booting USA's best team for their only win in group phases

Perhaps... but it IS 2nd Division soccer in a Country (including its northern territory :p) whose 1st Division is not much better than the median Central American league. In theory the USL should not be competitive at this level.

My assessment is that last year was a fluke and this year is its true level... but games & tournaments have to be played, success isn't appointed and future tournaments will clear this up.
