Every Major tournament in recent tends to produce an England player who's a Hero and an England player who's a Villan.
For Example;
Euro 96; Hero: Gazza Villain: Southgate.
France 98; Hero: Owen Villain: Beckham.
Euro 2000; Hero: Shearer Villain: Phill Neville.
Japan/Korea 2002; Hero: Beckham Villain: Seaman.
So it's safe to say for Euro 2004 (so far);
Hero: Rooney Villain: Gerrard.

I dont really hold Gerrard responsible for much of anything. To be honest he has half a second to react, only really had one option (the back pass), unfortunatly he miss hit it and the rest is history, but these things happen.
Me I blame Heskey, simply because he cocks up with such consistency that its impossible to defend him :)

I think the problem was Heskey's position ,ie on the plane, yep, that's where the mistake was.

Hesky is a lot like a man at a lesbian orgy. Neither can score in the box.

Villain: Gerrard.
According to the injury prone tit Jamie Redknapp it was all Ashley Cole's fault.

Then Ashley Cole blamed Scholes. And then Scholes blamed Sven. And then Sven blamed the Pope. And then the Pope blamed Gerard Houllier.

And Goldenballs blamed Quieroz. Quieroz blamed Perez. Perez blames Posh. Posh blamed Prince Charles. Prince Charles blamed Rio Ferdinand. Rio blamed Palios. Palios blamed Dick Pound. Pound blamed Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Tutu could not be reached for comment....

...and Houllier asked for a 5 year plan, completely unaware of what it was he was being blamed of.

I'm worried about Santini, he could be a very good manager and get Spurs up to about Newcastle & Liverpool's level, and he will attract a good few players that otherwise would not come to Tottenham. I just have a bad feeling that the long-suffering Spurs fans will have to deal with another managerial flop.

He has very poor English and looks like someone took his last rolo. Spurs really know how to pick them....:D

England just don't have enough young players coming through the England ranks to make a difference since many players are aging.

i'd say england need to get rid of sven. what has the guy really done for the team? he seems to be afraid of the players, lets them do pretty much what they want. and he makes really bad decisions...
compare him to scolari, who was never afraid to sub anyone who wasn't playing well. yes, figo was pissed off when scolari replaced him but look how much better he played at the next game?? it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. i mean, that's being a coach.
to me, sven is the biggest problem england has although the squad itself does lack something...
but credit must go to cole and rooney who were outstanding. anyway, euro's over so i'll shut up. :)

England just don't have enough young players coming through the England ranks to make a difference since many players are aging.You are aware that England are xperiencing one of their best insurgences of young players for a long, long time? John Terry, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Jenas, Owen Hargreaves, Scott Parker, Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge, Gareth Barry, Jermaine Pennant, Jermaine Defoe, Chris Kirkland, Paul Robinson, Michael Dawson, Shola Ameobi, Carlton Cole, Matt Taylor, Shawn Wright-Phillips, Kevin Nolan, Glen Johnson, Darren Ambrose, Ledley King, Jlloyd Samuel, James McEveley, James Milner and many more I am sure I am forgetting about are all between the ages of 17/18-24, so the majority of these will not peek for at least another 3-4 years and won't start to age/decline for 7+ years (maybe even 12 odd years in the case of the younger guys like Milner & Rooney). Sure, they all won't turn out to be worldclass players, and a good few of them may even burn out or just never fulfill their potential, but there are a lot of other unknowns who will in turn emerge from nowhere to become good players (e.g. Jonathon Stead). The "00's" are shaping up to be far greater for England than the 90's.
And for that matter, who is aging? David Beckham, Sol Campbell & Paul Scholes are the only top English players I can think of whose time is limited. Phil & Gary Neville, David James, Nicky Butt, Emile Heskey, etc are not exactly 'intergral' member of the team who will be sorely missed. Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand, etc still have plenty of time left.
