personally they would look for defenders at the 14-16 age because they will have an abundence of midfielders and strikers from younger ages unless someone stands out to be really good then obviously they would pick them, i think they look for vision, strength , skill and being able to get out of tight spots with the ball, and for a defender timing the takle well. it helps if your quick and tall but at this age there going to catch up sooner or later but if your quick and lankey your gonna spend half the game trippin over the ball, dont play dum just play football and move the ball round the pitch and if you lose it try your hardest to get it back, encourage and dont moan. ;)

Yeah I have seen so many players play like ******** compared to their normal standard, but scouts still picked up that they were good, from movement and vision. They know what they are doing but why are scouts so bad at pro clubs! They don't know a good player until he smacks them in the face whereas every fan with digital TV knows how good they are, I have so many examples of this but am not gonna go through them.

He brings up a good point. When was the last time you saw a 5'5" keeper or a player who was slow as molasses.

Jorge Campos and Osvaldo Perez are both 5'5.

And Mexican. Mexicans are shorter than the average American.

Peter Schmichel wasn't that tall either but he was one hell of a keeper.

Very true. Schmeichel was only 6'4".

At that age in the states they would turn one of those mids into a back and teach him how to defend. So he can attack when his team loses the balls since he has some attacking skills.

National teams even do this.

Talking about a youth team associated with a professical club team like Manchester United?

Play on the United States youth National team would help.

Play in a tournament in that country with a team playing against a professional clubs youth team, and have a very good tournament.

this is a wierd way through to the acedemy but.....
my team won the league very easily (scoring over 200 goals and letting in 6) not losing or drawing a game in 20 games)
The leeds United acedemy noticed us and invited us down for a game at thorp arch (leeds utd training ground) against their acedemy (my age obviosly) and we won 2-0!
they picked out 5 players from our team (me one of them) and we are going for trials soon (when the acedemy starts up on July 1st after 6 week break)
the scout that chose us said we all had speed and we good with the ball at our feet, so i think thats what they are looking for!

Hey, I am responding to this writing you posted. I am 15 years old, I have played club soccer at the highest level for 5 years, won the state championship two times in nc, and I am the best player on my team. I am 6 feet tall, and built at 155-160 pounds, and I have also played varsity soccer for my high school. I want more than anything to come for a summer and train and play with a team in england, but in no way do I know how to go about doing this. I mean I have all of the skills/size/speed, possibly more than enough to get onto the academy teams, but I don't know how to get noticed by some coach overseas. I was wondering if there was any possible way, since you will be in leeds' academy, to put in the good word, or give my email to a coach and tell him of my response to you, my parents would be more than happy to let me come and stay there for a long period of time.

please reply soon.

You're probably not fast enough.

if I am not fast enough then i guess you would be saying my team is really slow, because I am one of if not the fastest player on my team. I ran track for school, and won most times in the first heat 200 and placed 2nd-4th in the first heat 100.

How much a factor is speed in soccer? I think speed is a great thing to have but you dont have to be the fasted guy in the world to play soccer.
