...for years of brutal Nazi occupation. At least, that's the view of our favorite ManU striker, RvN.

Apparently the boys didn't settle the score enough in '88.

In a related story, I am secretly hoping that the US draws England at the next WC so the US can exact a little revenge for the War of 1812. I can just see the interviews "Well, this is more than just a soccer game. This is about retribution for those bas***ds burning the White House 194 years ago!!!"

That's right. Landon, Bobby Convey and DaMarcus will run onto the pitch for that match screaming..."For God....for country....for Dolly Madison...aarrggh!!"

Guys, for the Dutch its always about the war (well, that and 1974 too). They'll continue to harbor that resentment probably until they can consistently perform better than Germany both on and off the field. The success of 1988 is small consolation for a country that has produced so many talented stars and so little silverware, especially compared to their German rivals, who don't play football that is nearly as "pretty".

I realize that, but if the US went into their match against, say, Japan talking about retribution for Pearl Harbor they'd be absolutely fried for it.

True, although that's slightly apples and oranges. Eh, for the record I think the Dutch need to get past their little inferiority complex with the Germans, and bringing up the war probably doesn't help things.

For similar reasons I am hoping for a match against Italy so we can get revenge for that damned Roman Invasion of 800 AD or whenever :)

Really we should all be hoping to beat Italy just so we can watch as few piss-poor performances as possible, such as the one we saw yesterday. :)

Yeah, but there's that movie coming out that's claiming that's how you got your King Arthur. Shows what I know. I always thought it was because "some watery tart through a sword" at some bloke. ;)

Yes, he did become king when a scimitar was lobbed at him.
I can't wait for that epic Greece vs. Iran matchup - you know, to make up fro the battles of Marathon and Salamis. And you thought 66 A.D. was a long time ago! (The real Roman invasion of Brittania.)

Sometimes I think it would be a good thing if supreme executive power was derived from farcical aquatic ceremonies...

Yes, but then our profession would likely be replaced with augurs, or pontifexes who'd read the migration of fish to determine whether or not France needs to be invaded

This is priceless. As a History teacher, I find this even more funny! Good stuff.

You should see some of nicephoras' better historical work in the "Politics" forum. He shamed me on my factual inaccuracies concerning the Battle of Thermopylae, but we did have an interesting debate on "Which barbarian tribe wins in a streetfight".

I'm still an Ostrogoth man, 100%.

I figured with your time spent in Texas you'd have more bitter feelings towards Mexico, phishy.
