The proposed "Olympic/Jets stadium" in New York City will not be a soccer friendly stadium. The pitch demensions will not accomodate a regulation size soccer pitch. NYC taxpayers will have to pay half of the bill.It is an outrage that they would dare to build such a permanent structure in the middle of the most international city in the world and not make this stadium soccer accomodating!! If you feel like wise regardless of where you live please write to the powers that be(Jets football team/NYC govt and newspapers with your opinions). Here's a good start newyorkcityabc.org

I sent a note mentioning that it should be full regulation size to info@nyconventioncorridor.org (I found this from the Jets site). The reply was:

"We are working on bringing soccer here, no question"

I'm sure they are aware of the desires of the soccer community. So, if they aren't making it full regulation size, then why not? Could someone provide us with more details on how much too small it is, and why they choose to make it so? What limitations will it have because of it's size?

I was wondering if there were any thoughts or plans towards bringing a MLS (Major League Soccer) expansion team to the new West Side Stadium? With the Metrostars getting a new stadium in Harrison, NJ, it would be nice if NYC could get a team to help build a rivalry. Perhaps bring back the famed Cosmos name? How about United States National Team exhibition and World Cup qualifying games? Or does the stadium just plan to hold international exhibition games involving foreign teams? As a taxpayer in NYC, I certainly hope that MLS and the US National Soccer Team are in the plans for this new stadium. If the West Side Stadium becomes involved with MLS, the stadium will have an additional 25 booked dates, and will be elgible to hold a MLS All-Star and MLS Cup game. The 2002 MLS Cup held in Gillete Stadium drew a crowd of over 63, 000, and provided a great economic impact to the city of Boston, and the surrounding area of the stadium.
In addition, I was wondering what the field size would be? Will it be FIFA approved for soccer?

As a Jets/soccer fan, I can't help but laugh at some of you guys. Soccer fans DEMAND!!! There will be no MLS team there because their whole point about the stadium besides the Jets, is to use the xtra space for larger conventions which bring in more PEOPLE and MONEY than MLS. That's why they will only allow certain marquee games. Because they'll draw better than MLS.

No, free market works on the basis of supply and demand. There is simply not enough soccer fans for the city and Jets to justify building a soccer friendly venue at that site. I think the stadium will be, but not because a few hundred soccer fans demand it. And until there is a 14 year waiting list for season tickets for a soccer team, like I am on for the Jets......YES, you all should shut up.

I could have sworn that is what I said. And actually, this stadium goes beyond the free market since the land is being gifted from the city. Thus all New Yorkers are essentially owners of that land and have a say in the terms of the deal.

Actually, I think the opposite is true. There are more than enough soccer fans in New York to justify making the stadium suitable for soccer. Do the larger field dimensions somehow hinder the architects' ability to design a stadium on that site? Even from a financial standpoint, New Yorkers should demand that the field is suitable for soccer so that the venue has as many revenue options as possible. It is just plain stupid not to.

And until there is a 14 year waiting list for season tickets for a soccer team, like I am on for the Jets......YES, you all should shut up.

Heck, this is being financed by the NYC gov't in large part, and they are B-R-O-K-E and have been for 30 years. Let's not assume they somehow have acquired some wisdom potion.

The stadium/convention center part is actually seperate from the Olympic nonsense. If NYC doesn't get the olympics, the Jets still want that stadium. And they're putting up 800 million of their own money. And guys be honest. If your soccer team was getting a stadium partly funded by taxpayers and football fans "demanded" that their game also be played there, wouldn't you go nuts? Soccer teams need their OWN stadiums otherwise they'll be treated the way the Metro's are at the Meadowlands.
