portugal 1 - 2 greece

ronaldo came on for the second half and was played on the wide left!
lost the ball in midfield, tracked back and conceded a penalty which the greeks converted for their second goal.
scored a header from a corner on 93 mins.
looked very out of place on the left flank and on the portugese team.
put in alot of crosses to the right post with no on there for his delivery.
any comments?

cristiano is one of the best young talents in the world and he should play on the right and figo in the middle.rui costa should have never started,His days are over.let deco get a chance to shine

he seems to be a very good header of the ball - which is another thing of his that can be used to great effect!

good goal and imo if anyone deserved a goal for portugal it was him - but at the same time his overall game was poor - wayward crosses to many stepovers in which he lost the ball!

The number of times he lost the ball was mostly irrelevant, he was the only real danger for Portugal, easily their best player. Definitely should have been starting (along with Deco) and Scolari will get quite a bit of heat for not starting them.

His crosses were often long but he got them off 80% or more of the time, was more unfortunate that the men in the middle never got open or never ran to the back post. Still he would have done much better on the right. And Portugal had no one on the right! 90% of the attacks seemed to go through Ronaldo on the left side. Don't know what Scolari was thinking.

He's not a great header of the ball but he does make enough good runs to get open for headers. The one he scored was his third good opportunity with his head.

Was unfortunate on the penalty. The Greek player seemed to drag his leg looking for contact but Ronaldo's defending was, as the announcers said, rather naive.

Spain plays a more controlled game so it's a little unfair to say ... but so far he's the most exciting player in Group A. Exteberria had a nice game too.

Ronaldo should have played on the right, he is far better there.
I was surprised just how crap Portugal where.

The time Ronaldo spent on the pitch, Portugal drew Greece 1-1. That's more than you can say for most of the Portuguese team. He was also one of their few threatening players.

He conceded a penalty while defending, something most attacking wingers seldom have to do.

If we're biased, you're just as bad the other way. And it's our forum.

Portugal WAY overstacked the left side of the pitch today. We had Ronaldo on the left, Figo in center left, and Deco in center. No one was filling the attacking lane on the right. Ronaldo put a lot of good crosses in that could have been chances if there was anyone on the right.

Portugal would have been more effective--if they insist on playing Ronaldo wide left--with Deco in the center and Figo on the right.

I wasn't all that impressed with Portugal's defense. I thought I was watching a Man Utd game after Rio's suspension...Greece put 10 men behind the ball, and Portugal couldn't do anything about it. Portugal made two mistakes and they lost 2-0....just like Man Utd in a lot of our losses this year.

Spain is scarry good. They could go all the way. Ronaldo looked better than Torres, though. Puyols is incredible...would love to have him at Old Trafford.

Ok... here goes...

Ronaldo played very well... in conceeding the penalty he was as some said, naive, but he really showed passion, he lost the ball and ran back hard to try and win possesion back, he was a bit unlucky because he did not really challenge for the ball, he just bumped into the guy as he changed directions but it was undoubtedly a penalty.. I felt that poor defending by the defenders added to the situation as well... the defender who was in position waited far too long, he should have engaged the player with the ball and let Ronaldo, who had momentum and more pace/accelleration anyway, cover the player that made the run off the ball...

As for his crosses, maybe he should have tried a few to the center, but Pauletta was heavily marked and Deco was never going to win a header there and there were 5 or 6 Greeks in the box at all times... I blame Figo... Figo sulked when he did not get the ball and instead of holding his position which was RW he drifted to the middle or even the left so he could get the ball like a 19 year-old. If Figo had stayed wide, he would have gotten on to some of the crosses and would have made space for those in the middle anyway...
Deco looked more dangerous than Costa, but Costa was not terrible... I think instead of playing both Maniche and Costinha, they could have played Ronaldo for Maniche and let Figo play Central Mid with Deco (instead of Costa) allowing Ronaldo to play RW.. however I am not opposed to playing both Costa and Deco in midfield and letting Ronaldo be a sub again... he works well there...

Contrary to what some believed.. I don't think Ronaldo was put off by being played on the left wing at all... he seemed very natural and at ease - I think he has been working on his Left footed crossing because he got more of them in than he usually does when he plays on the left, not dribbling to get on his right foot as much.

Deco should play attackingmid from the start next match and Costa could play a more Central role, or Figo could play attacking and Deco central w/ Ronaldo RW.

A few comments about his play:

1) I think he confirmed his enormous potential

2) he needs to look up before crossing

3) looks like he might be another Paul Scholes when called on to defend :)

4) made some interesting plays centrally - support striker potential there

5) when the right back played like a pole - didn't respond to to the stepovers etc - Cristiano tended to run into him :D
