1994 World Cup coverage changed the way soccer is broadcast in U.S. (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5185264/) - MSNBC

Interesting article, albeit one that's too short, unfortunately.

One other insight I'd like to add to it-- and I'm going to do a little name-dropping here from my own personal experience (so this is an official warning)...

I interviewed ESPN's Bob Ley for an old magazine that I was writing and editing for some years ago, and I asked him about (among other things) the television legacy left by the network's World Cup coverage that year, and he did say something very profound about the clock and score in the upper corner, something which the MSNBC.com article says is now downright expected.

Bob said something along the lines of, "...in a 60-plus cable-channel environment, it hooks the viewers in," as describing something that made that feature advantageous for ESPN.

Certainly that was true in the mid-1990s/pre-DSS/pre-TIVO television culture, but the fact that so many other networks have followed that lead have made it less unique amid a culture that also has been known for its channel-surfing, too.

Thing is, there's not much to improve upon with that feature. That box in the upper corner is so perfect, that everything is right there.
