View Full Version : England needs a trophy

Hi Lads. I’ve been on an extended worldwide holiday. Rio is always nice and the ladies and beach footie are a sight to be holden. I’ve had a chance to play a little beach footie with Cantona (supplied him with a few goals) and some keep ups against Romario. That was quite fun. Romairo is brilliant at the game, but I managed not to embarrass myself. The Brazilian ladies are the most beautiful in the world.
So here we are at the start of the European Cup. I see France winning the group. England is long over due to show that they belong on the world stage. It’s one thing to say that you are a top footballing nation, but when you don’t have the trophies or finals appearances, it makes for thin gruel. I don’t want to pull out all the old data to back this up, but I think we can all agree that England has not been in the top tier. It’s time for them to step up and prove it with a trophy. You can’t argue that logic.
I will catch a few of the games from the comfort of my cabana.

Nah - that stuff with Romario etc is trying a little bit too hard. It could have been a legendary return from you Wildman but that's just a bit too obvious.

Mike would you consider England among the worlds best if they do not make it into the semis of the European Cup? England is under pressure to deliver SOMETHING other than a great league in the Premiership. It's time for England to stop talking about having great players and a good team , and actually produce one that delivers results on the pitch with a trophy. A trophy from 40 years ago means nothing. For heavens sake, they have not even played in a final in 40 years.
Don't worry. I probably won't stay past the tournament. I have too much beach footy in me bones, to sit in front of a computer and point out the obvious.

The obvious is that I have followed England for 30 years and the only true center mid I have ever seen is Gazza. That of course is when they came closest in 90.
Again, a lot of good workers, flank players, and some decent attacking mids, but as usual no true playmaker.
One playmaker puts this team at the top. Why can't England produce one with their resources?
Why do the English always celebrate players as WC when they are not?
This is an excellen team, but how can they win without a playmaker?
Just won't happen.
Oh well, I'll be rooting for them, but not expecting a result.

England rely on the midfield as a whole to create chances rather than one hyper-ego.
If this thread gets out of hand I'm closing it.

Nah, we're okay mate - we've got Wildman to guide us.
In fact, he should call up SGE and give some pointers.
His vast knowledge and expierence from his playing days at the Cosmos with Pele et al is streets ahead of McClaren.

I think you've got this wrong. While we don't have one player you can point to and say 'that is our playmaker', Lampard, Scholes, Beckham can all do this to some extent, and with those players combined we have enough playmaking ability in the side.
However all our midfield players want to play in the centre. England need a Cristiano Ronaldo type player, who is going to stay wide and dribble past defenders. That's what we're lacking most IMHO.
Why do the English always celebrate players as WC when they are not?
Perhaps because no-one agrees on the definition of 'world-class'?

Romario and co. would never play beach footie with a nobody like you, Wildman.

Exactly what I was thinking about earlier. I was wondering why the "class of 92" Man U youth team that went on to form a core for the Treble in 1999 couldn't reproduce for England, and was thinking it may be the lack of a Giggs type dribbler, who would scare a defence. I'm hoping that Rooney's willingness to run at centre backs my right this balance this summer. But I think the lack of true wingers is a real weakness to the English game at the moment. The wide players who impress in the Premier League, Duff, Reyes (when he plays there), Ronaldo, Giggs, Pires, Lunberg just from the big three, are all foreign.

Agreed. Gazza was the best.

Clan, I've had some well reasoned posts in the past backed by facts and statistics. There was no conjecture. Everything was 100% fact.

Ah, Wildman, you dreary old rapist. I did wonder how long the Skippersnack persona would sate your masochistic need for the brutality that your original incarnation brought you. So how's the hunt for Internet p*ssy going? Have you actually murdered anyone yet? Or are you still at the picture wall/continuous masturbation stage of your descent into sex-starved madness?

Actually, I've always attracted the ladies like sugar attracts ants. I guess I've always had that magnetism. The beaches in Rio are incredible and ladies still go for this old footie player.
Who in the world is Skippersnack? He sounds like a loveable bloke.

Lads, a trophy is proof. Germany and Brazil have them by the buckets. The Argies, the French, Danes, Italians, they all have them. You must have a trophy and you must play in a final for a chance at one. The Belgians, the Czecks, the Dutch have all played in finals. There are others. I can pull out the data if I must.
