I watched the US Open Cup commercials on Fox Sports World. I am at my local pub and what the hell is that? It's a gold cup ontop of a plaque rectangular pedistal. It really looks not worthy to fight for once again. First it's the Glass beer mug, now it looks like something out of a Bowling trophy case.
Please bring back the old Dewer Cup. Or at least spend the money to make it look presentable and decent.

Uh, no, not really. It used to be, but the rest of us, you know, got with the present times.

Well, being that you're at least fifty years removed from reality, my opinion is looking pretty strong right about now.

Someone finally realized where Association Football was on the totem pole and since there's no diminutive term for American Football, it was simpler for the USFA to compromise.
Where is the Dewar Trophy? Is it too fragile to leave the Hall of Fame?

I bet the players could give rat's ass what it looks like. They aren't fighting for a trophy. They're fighting for this.

Sorry. I'm just in the group who doesn't get too caught up in what a trophy looks like.

Yeah, the money is most important. Still, having a really nice looking trophy would help. If you fight for five months to win something and at the end you are embarrassed to actually hold it up for others to see, chances are a change is needed.
Still, I prefer the gold cup on a pedestal to the glass mug of 2002.

The World Cup trophy isn't some large, gaudy piece of hardware either. A trophy is just the reminder that something was won, that's it. And of course that money doesn't hurt.
Don't get me wrong - I love the Jules Rimet trophy and all, but it's certainly not anything huge like the Vince Lombardi NFL trophy or even the Champions League huge ol'Cup from Hell.
What's important is winning the damn thing, no matter what it looks like.

They've made yet ANOTHER cup?
...I have to wonder why they put a bunch of money into refurbishing the Dewar a few years ago... then retired it to the Hall of Fame after only one or two teams won it.
All by way of seconding/thirding/xing BRING BACK THE DEWAR!
Or at least give me a good reason (like it's on the edge of falling apart) that they can't!

I would bet it's actually the trophy they borrowed from the Galaxy when they won 2 years ago. That's how it looked then.
I would bet solid money if the Fire wins this year, it'll look the same as the 2 we have on display in the office now. Two large crystal cup trophis on small mahogany pedestals.

I am really surprised that my post here got resurfaced, but I'm very happy everyone shares the same feeling I have about how a trophy represents a true FA Cup Tournament as historic and prestigous as the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. I have my 2003 MetroStars Yearbook and in a paticular section they have a US Open Cup section.
On the front page they have the list of past winners with the Chicago Fire's group picture winning the USOC in 1998, Dallas Burn winning it in 1997 & DC United the first MLS squad to win the Dewer in 1996.
Man I have to tell you all that it is a wonderful site to see.It looks so beautiful and worthy to fight for. Then you see a picture of the Fire in 2000 winning the Open Cup and it's a glass see thru cup. Absolutly disgusting. I hate it. The one that the Crew won last season looked like it could hold about 3 full large bags of unsalted peanuts.
If the USSF had the courage as well as spend a little more cash to create a true trophy it would look and feel so much better.
