Passports taken away?

I caught a story on SKysports here in the states about hooligans banned from Euro 2004. I understand than some 2500 people are not allowed to go. What I did not understand was to what level the gov't was revoking their travel rights. I thought I heard that these poeple are actually forced to turn in their passports, but I was not sure (I studied Spanish in high school not British, so my translation skills are not up to par). WOuld these people be allowed to travel elsewhere, ie to the states if they wanted too?? Is there any backlash form civil rights groups??? I wonder how something like this woudl fly in the states.....

Well, it's not the States, so it's not a plausible question to ask. They just do things differently there. If they had said that they couldn't go to Portugal, but they could go to the US, then they would just fly to the US and then hop a plane to Portugal. The US doesn't care about that sort of thing. This is the only real way to stop them, and good riddance I say.

I think that "known" hooligans are required to turn in their passports prior to any major tournament, but perhaps some of our British friends could enlighten us further.

Maybe some of you know a "known" hooligan. Heck, maybe some of you ARE hooligans. If that's the case, we welcome you with open arms to the US.. ;)

There's a bit more about it here, seems they may take passports away in needs be, I know in the past they have made known offenders report to police stations on the day of the match.

Funny Coach. I'm not trying to slam Nascar, but it gives me hope that one day soccer/football has potential to catch on.
I just have a hard time understanding people I know who love Nascar but says soccer is boring. At least many of the European Grand Prix and Rallies involve more than just taking a left hand turn.

NEWAY... with regards to the hooligans... its a necessary act that has been used in the past to try an lessen the hooliganism at major tournaments... this is fine because its not like these people had trips to Paris, Sydney and Rome planned... and if they did... oops... they should not have become "known hooligans" I am all for that kind of action... I hate it when the letter of the law, or human rights groups/lawyers get in the way of a law that is supposed to be benificial, or try to uphold a law in every sense when its clearly being taken out of context.. like the right to bear arms in the US...

I actually am a big NASCAR fan, but I also watch every minute, LIVE, of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona when they are broadcast. I'm a closet speed junkie, really.

Not sure if this counts but, when I went to the last ever Cup race at Rockingham in February, right as Dale Jarrett's engine blew, a traumatized DJ fan hurled a half full can of beer (w/ can coozy) onto the track and nailed one of the cars right in the windshield. The off-duty Mayberry police officers doing security, however, didn't even try to do anything until long after the guy had moved himself to another section.

F1, although it's incredibly one-sided. WRC is my personal choice if I want to watch a race. I also enjoy the races around the Isle of Mann.
