Just want to reiterate that it is indeed a great read. Too bad this isn't the typical level of coverage given to US games.

that second USA Today article ('Spice Boyz' dream big, have fun, too) isn't quite as cool as the first, but it provides this wonderful quote:
A rumor spread through Grenada's team that the U.S. Soccer Federation already was selling tickets to the USA's next round of World Cup qualifying games. Though the rumor was false, it served as motivation during the team's final preparations last week.
Looks like we're giving some bulletin board material to the Grenadians. As I understand it, single game tickets for Jamaica/Haiti aren't on sale, but you can buy a ticket for that game as part of a two-game package. Funny stuff.

On this date.....

1953 - Three years after beating England at the 1950 World Cup, the US National Team loses 6-3 to the English in New York.
1984 - The Baltimore Blast win their only championship of the original Major Indoor Soccer League, winning 10-3 at St.Louis to take the Championship Series 4 games to 1.
1990 - The San Diego Sockers frustrate the Baltimore Blast once again, winning another Game 7 of the finals 6-4 to take the Major Indoor Soccer League championship. It marks the fourth time Baltimore has come up short in the finals to San Diego.
2002 - New England's Taylor Twellman scores two goals in one minute, tying the MLS record. Twellman scores in the 35th and 36th minute in a losing cause against DC United at RFK Stadium.

From the KC article:
• Saturday's MLS game of the week was bumped from ABC to ESPN2 for the WNBA. When Ronald Reagan died, ABC pre-empted the WNBA game it was showing. That game then moved to ESPN2, which cut away from the Fire-D.C. United contest.

The league didn't see that coming, obviously. But Borg called it a “part of the TV business.”

“That was based purely on the established network hierarchy of the sports,” Borg said. “It's not how a network perceives one sport over another.”

But try telling that to MLS fans.

Doesn't really add anything to the 'debate' but at least it's an official comment.

67 also being the number of plastic surguries that Joan Rivers has gone through as well.

Great read on the USA Today piece. C-bus be prepared for the busloads of folks from Grenada!

Then they had to wait more than an hour before getting the field because a local cricket team was playing. Cricket — the country's pastime — always takes priority.
Damn anti-soccer bias.

The light breeze spreads the aroma of popcorn through the stands, and a man selling Carlsberg beer takes the microphone. "Buy two beers for $5 and get a ticket to enter a contest to win a trip to Ohio to see the game! So drink beer and support Grenada!" he says. Throughout the game, even during key plays, the beer hawker with the microphone delivers the same pitch, each time making Ohio sound like some magical travel destination a world away.
Why do they have to play ads in the stadium? That's so mickey mouse-minor league! Why can't they just let the game be advertisement itself!?

Who's being sarcastic? Grenada is never going to be respected in footie till they stop using Qwik goals, playing ads during the run and they actually do some marketing so we can actually pass 'Oar Ball' in popularity. I mean why don't we spend some money and attract some big name players? I mean jeez it's like we're going down to the local docks and saying, 'Hey, who want's to play?' This team is never going to go anywhere till we get some players with flair. Another thing, why is it that we can't get our top athletes to play footie? Oar Ball is soooo booooring I can't understand why Joe Six Pack even likes it, it's not like there isn't a deep pool of athletic males to groom into real footie players here.

But Baltimore has a dynasty in the non-original Major Indoor Soccer League, while San Diego is simply making up the numbers.

They used to play a best-of-seven?? Yeeps.

Nah, I had a friend named Kelly who had a site where he wrote bout basketball and everyone assumed he was a chick. I was just curious because although she is prone to a bit of hyperbole she's really written some bang up articles.

Last time I went to an Atlanta Silverbacks game, they do the same thing, talk during the game. It is annoying as crap, and they aren't giving away trips to Ohio.

Boo.

Melt the cup down and start the effer over again fresh.
