View Full Version : "INK ALMOST OUT!" Gee... guess I only have 200+ jobs left...

Two weeks ago, my printer started screaming at me (personification) that my ink was almost out.
Since then, I have printed no fewer than 200 jobs, and the ink shows no signs of running out.
Why in the world does it do this, and is there some way to adjust the sensitivity?? It really pisses me off.
Is it just HP being unbelievably greedy and wanting me to change cartridges too soon?

Is it just HP being unbelievably greedy and wanting me to change cartridges too soon?Yes. Ink is where they make their money.
HP, Epson and Canon are basically like drug dealers. They practically give away the printers so that you're committed to buying their ink.

What if I was turned on by asphyxiation?
Okay, so I really don't know that for a fact. It's just my theory. But you look at how printers have gotten incredibly cheaper over the past 10 years, and how they frequently have rebates and freebie offers. Then you have ink, which hasn't dropped in price as much as printers have. They make cartridges that doesn't work with any other brand, or worse, other models in the same brand.
So what makes sense for printer manufacturers?
a) Try to maximize profits with printers, then offer steep discounts on ink hoping that customers stay loyal
or
b) Get users locked into using their brand, even if it means minimizing the profit margin, then mark up the prices on the ink, knowing that customers don't often consider the price of ink when choosing a printer, and that they aren't likely to go out and buy another printer because the ink is too expensive.

No, I think you're probably right. I was just being (un)funny.

--I spent $50 on a printer three years ago. It costs me $55 to get color and black ink and I have to do it at least twice a year. If that's not a moneymaking conspiracy I don't know what is.

I'm over 400 print jobs since it said that it was running low, and it's still going strong. Incidentally, it has stopped saying that it's low.
Perhaps it's programmed to think, "Well, I guess we can't fool this one."

I have a Xerox "ALL IN ONE" And i just put in a new ink cartridge and it is telling me that im out...when im not... its really messed up....
I just really can't stand this printer. i got it like in 1999 and since then i put more money on trying to get ink than the printer itself.....
the worst is that you can't use a needle and pump some ink in it... it needs 'quality' ink and each ink cart cost about 60-80 dollars! CRAZY ************S!!!!!!!
