I am fervently hoping MLS will expand as soon as the expansion is sustainable. Personally, I have always thought Rochester should get a team. Twin Cities, too. 10 teams, 5 games a week, and 8 out of 10 in the playoffs. Gets a bit boring.

So I am in favor of "ChivasUSA", or Roman Abramovich buying a franchise, or Rochester getting moved up.

As I understand it, Chivas' ownership group is buying an MLS franchise. Sort of like a family from say China moving to say Houston and buying a McDonald's. The restaurant might have a chinese owner and chinese manager, but it is not a chinese restaurant. It serves Big Macs.
Chivas USA will adhere to MLS' rules just as it would to the English FA's rules were it to purchase Leeds (if they had the 70-odd million to wipe out the debt) and rename the club ChivasUK.

Again as I understand it, Chivas the team in Guadalahara will have no connection, other than an owner, with ChivasUSA, no matter where it lands. No player trades/loans/sharing. No "we play here March thru November and there November thru March..."

Based on my understanding, this looks great to me. Hard to have a problem with it. Who wants MLS to stagnate at 10 teams? If you are a Mexican (or a Russian) what do you care if Chivas' owners (or Abramovich) buy a franchise somewhere else? Would you still fill up at the Pemex on the Avenida if Pemex bought a few gas stations in San Diego? Of course you would.

So my 2 questions:

If you are an 'American' or MLS fan and opposed to ChivasUSA, do you just plain not like Mexicans or what? Please state your specific objection to adding a team that operates within the rules of MLS. Or shut-up.

If you are a 'Mexican' or Chivas fan and opposed to ChivasUSA, do you just plain not like the USA? Please state your specific objections to Chivas' owners buying a franchise. Would you object to them buying a team in England? There are several for sale cheap, it might not be that impossible.

Is it 100% guaranteed Chivas will be in MLS in 2005?

Is anyone else guaranteed?

Good question.

My question is the following: How, if at all, does the stellar and neighborly behavior of the fine folks down in Guadalajara last night, affect things? I'm sure that such a display of passion can only convince doubters that Chivas USA and its fun-loving, chirpy fans will be great for the league. Come on you obsessed followers of the beautiful game. Show us lifeless, soulless, passionless gabachos how to behave at the espectaculo that is futbol. Óle!

Of course not. There are no guarantees that Chivas, or any other rumored new investor, will ever operate a team in MLS or that MLS will expand at all in 2005. I mean, hasn't that been obvious from the very beginning?

Lifeless, soulless? You mean the American behavior after a city wins a sports championship and riots ensue?

No, because it didn't happen. And don't try to ignore the real story, pal. And if it did, so what? Mexican soccer is nothing but a cesspool, anyway.

me extrañan esos comentarios, de una persona que mostraba mas integridad y conocimiento de asuntos Internacionales.

Ummmm... why so much anger vs the fellows south of the border?

the small grp from atlas and Chivas, can not make you generalize on the feeling. Read On pal:

I have been living under a rock for several months now and am way behind on MLS news, so I would appreciate some insight on this most important issue.

Are these correct assumptions?

1. Chivas USA will share the HDC with the Galaxy starting in April 2005.

2. Despite the huge tradition of the club in Mexico, Chivas USA will have to comply to MLS rules and play mostly Americans with only a select group of foreigners allowed. Those foreigners will probably be young Mexican players though.

3. MLS will add three additional expansion franchises in 2006.

If these assumptions are true, it should be good for the league. My only concern would be if the LA area could financially sustain two franchises in one city.

I've read a few posts that have said Daniel Hernandez and "Chivas" Martinez would be great targets for Chivas USA. But, does anyone know their contract status with Necaxa. Or if either of those players have any actual desire to return to MLS?

Im not sure how long their contracts are. In Mexico players dont become free-agents after their contracts end like MLS. So they will both require a transfer fee. I heard FIFA is pushing for no "player rights" after contracts, but it wont happen in Mexico anytime soon.

Im sure they would both come if MLS pays them more money then they are currently making. Mexican players make a lot of money. And they get their money TAX-FREE. So I would guess if they came they would get payed near-max salary(275K).

Are Chivas USA goign to utilize MLS' expansion draft?

Unprotected players from the existing MLS teams will be made available to Chivas USA and SLC for selection via the expansion draft. Neither team is under any obligation to pick any of the players in the draft. Whether Chivas USA decides to utilize the expansion draft to fill or complement its roster probably depends on what players are available.

That would be my guess.

Ramon Ramirez and Francis Palencia agreed to join LA Chivas and 3rd & 4th Chivas players decline offer to join LA Chivas, according to LA Times and Mexsports.

It will all depend on wether MLS wants to make this draft a big deal.

If not, you will see A. Torres, G Gonzalez, De La Torre, R. Corrales, etc. all protected and Chivas USA will only pick up a 2-3 players at most.

because if they made the draft a big deal then teams would foolishly unprotect their good players?

welcome to MLS. you suck.

Right

Sort of

Don't know

Since the 2nd one is the only one I can reply to well...they have to follow the rules with one exception (that applies to RSL too tho there its irrelevant) that they get a host of TI players to start out. So, in reality, their starting 11 will include only 3 American-born players. Their lineup will look something like this:

GK Zuniga (MEX)
D Hendrickson (SVSG)
D de la Torres (MEX)
D Perez (USA)
M Ramirez (MEX)
M Gomez (USA)
M Walker (USA)
M Cuadros (MEX)
M/F Romo (MEX)
F Martins (BZL)
M/F Sandoval (MEX)

With their bench (18-deep) something like this:

GK Guzan (USA)
D Loeres (MEX)
D Begines (MEX)
M Mendoza (MEX)
F Torres (USA)
M Lopez (USA)
M Jimenez (USA)

If Mendoza and one of the two Chivas Jr. defenders crack the squad, its very possible Chivas will be starting only one American. And its hardly like Fancisco Gomez and Jamil Walker are "must starters" (certainly Orlando Perez isn't). So if they could somehow get another international player onto the team at the midfield position, it would certainly possible for them not to have a single American player on the field.
