It will be Gerrard, I'll bet my house on it. Sven already gave it to him and he's done well in that role for Liverpool.

John Terry would be captain before Rio I think.

I agree, Stevie God is certainly the best choice, just a shame he won't have many years more than Becks (tear comes to eye as contemplates current young stars growing to retirement age in my lifetime....)

Steven Gerrard.....

Are there any other players under 25 in the England squad that can take up leadership?

John Terry is the captain at Chelsea and could easily do the job fulltime for England. Michael Owen has already captained England and handled it comfortably. Rio Ferdinand has been talked about as becoming the future captain at Man Utd when Keane moves on and he could do the same job for England.

Then there are other 25/26 or under players out there like Jamie Carragher, or Sean Davis who captained England U-21 and will break into the England squad very shortly. Then there are other possible young players like Hargreaves, or maybe even a mature Alan Smith after some seasoning at ManYoo.

I gagree with this. It could be any of them really, Gerrard and Terry have the current edge as they captain their club teams. Reckon Gerrard will get it after Beckham steps down as he is so central to the team. Terry will face stiff competition for his place when an unsuspended Rio, and fully fit Wes Brown and Woodgate around. (That, with Campbell sure to feature for a few more years, leave a fantastic group of centre backs!)

I totally agree with your first choice. Stevie G will definately become Captain of England and it will happen during the 2006 World Cup campaign (which starts in Sept 04). Rio Ferdinand wouldn't be able to handle it and besides, even if he did have a chance, he's blown it! also any talk of him becoming MU's captain after Keano is a story he's reserving for this forthcoming book 'is this a test?' John Terry? hmmmm, he's come on well the past 12 months or so since his message in a bottle to a certain London night club bouncer, but i honestly only ever see him as a stand-in to Stevie. As for the rest, possibly Frank Lampard in the next few years ... but i can't see anyone else of worth at this stage. Anyway, for now, let's just wish the boys well in Portugal and await for the changing of the armband from Madrid to Merseyside!
