Chivas USA will likely play in LA. Will the team really be called Chivas USA? I certainly hope not. I don't know anything about Chivas Mexico. Do they have a nickname?

Chivas USA will wear the same red and white striped uniform as Chivas Mexico with a different logo.

I suggest the following team names:

Chivas Angelicales (angels)
Chivas Angelenos (residents of Los Angeles)
Chivas Rayas (stripes)

With more suggestions and discussion, a poll might be in order.

Of course, I should have included Los Angeles Chivas.

I've always thought that was a great name.

Isn't Chivas the nickname? IIRC the official name is just Club Deportivo Guadalajara.

They use to be called "Chivas Rayadas" (sriped goats), but I haven't heard them being called that in a few years.

I'm fairly sure that the team name is official as Chivas USA. Vergara and the press has been referring to his expansion team as Chivas USA, so I think that is what it is going to be called. Otherwise, Vergara, Garber, and the media would refer to his expansion team as "yet-to-be-named expansion club". I've read that the team will sport the same jerseys that CD Guadalajara has, but with a different logo.

The colors are perfect for this 'American' team. :D

They are the Goats. Sounds like a good start for a new chant. Get busy! :D

If it's indeed L.A., then please call it Los Angeles Chivas, or Los Angeles <something>. Even Chivas de Los Angeles would be dumb.

Chivas of Nazareth - aka the Holy Goats.

How about the "L.A. Goats Busters"? Then we get us a goat for a mascot, ship it to Chicago, and have it pee all over Wrigley Field, thereby ridding the Cubs of the curse. When the Cubs finally win the World series next year, they can thank the Chivas mascot. Think of all the free publicity for the team! Heck, even ESPN would cover that.

Isn't Chivas the nickname?

Yes.

The interesting thing is that the nickname was given to them by their archrivals Club America. In an attempt to put down the team, Americanistas said that the players looked like a bunch of goats running around the field. Guadalajara fans then over time took that and turned into a thing of pride and their nickname ever since.

IIRC the official name is just Club Deportivo Guadalajara.

You are correct JG.

I hope the team is not called Chivas USA. I hope they attach the city name to the team.

I would be upset if they were to use Atletico Los Angeles. Why? One day I hope an MFL team will be able to set up shop in Los Angeles with this name!

BTW what does IIRC? My guess: IIRC = Isn't it really cool. ????

U.S.Chivas

That way they're not ID'ed necessarily with any specific city. We can all join in the fun. Los Angeles is where they play half their games, that's all. But they'll be considered "home" throughout the rest of the league by the fanaticos in each city!

I thought about this too.

How about Chivas EEUU or Nacion Chivas instead of Chivas USA?

I do have to admit that IMHO U.S. Chivas is better than Chivas USA.

BTW who controls the naming rights? I sure hope it is Vergara and not MLS. If MLS chooses the name they will probably end up with Mighty Chivas USA :D

Interesting, didn't know that. I think the Montreal Canadiens got their "Habs" nickname in a similar way.

IIRC = If I recall correctly

yeah nacion chivas doesn't sound half-bad. Or to get all soccer-nerd, chivas internacional (chivas inter) ;) . I think, though, the name probably should have something to do with LA-- I understand why the concept of having a nationwide team is attractive, but I think it's actually a pretty tough sell to get non-local fans to support a team they never see, and to get local fans to support a team that isn't named after their town (perhaps a small factor in the failure of the Miami Fusion, aka Fusion FC...)

Kp,

I like Chivas Internacional!

That is a name I could live with. Being that LA is an international city it ties into the city of Los Angeles and yet doesn't alienate the rest of the country.

You should find a way to submit this name to Vergara and Co..

Also thanks JG for the answering the IIRC question. :)

Here's a name I hope never makes the list:

Los Chivas del Norte
