: Good-bye. Have a great weekend. Have a good chat with Dale next week and make sure that you look out for the rest of us as we chat with you during Euro 2004. Thank you and no matter what part of the world you are in, we got many great questions and unfortunately we cannot get to them all, but we hope you enjoyed the ones we did answer. Just one reminder to folks watching in the U.S., we are delighted to tell you that ESPNews will be showing daily highlights of Euro 2004 games, beginning June 12. Looking forward to keeping you all up to date. Thank you. -Tommy.

What great news posted by Tommy Smyth during his chat today. ESPNews where Smyth does his reports each Wed is going to show us the action from Portugal.
I was hoping this would happen. With Smyth on there every week its a great move on their part. Smyth does a great job with Brian Kenny and Michael Kim now they get a chance for the action from Euro 2004.
It knocks down the idea that ESPN dont care about Soccer. Well at least it shows some people see Soccer as been important in the grand scheme of things.
L :) ets get behind this idea and send them tons of letters.

Because ESPNEWS usually gets less than 100000 households tuning in at 5pm Eastern/2pm Pacific, ESPNEWS has to resort to gimmicks such as "Euro 2004 Highlights with Tommy Smyth" to try to get any audience it can so that it can get more than 100000 households and achieve a 0.10 Neilsen rating instead of getting the dubious "0.0" rating.

ESPN knows that international soccer outside the world cups is a niche product in the US market . Niche products belong on niche digital channels such as ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes, not on ESPN2 where it can do serious damage to Neilsen rating averages.

Notice that the pre Euro-2004 friendlies (Portugal-Lithuania, Netherlands-Belgium, Ireland-Jamaica) are airing on ESPN Deportes, but not ESPN2.

Euro 2004 highlights will also air every night on "SportsCenter (en Espanol)" on ESPN Deportes. "SportsCenter (en Espanol)" has international soccer news and highlights 365 days a year.

I think it's expecting a bit much to suggest that ESPN2 show friendlies from countries other than the US!!

Before WC2002, CBC in Canada, which is like the ABC in the U.S., was showing a warm-up match between Germany and Argentina. Tells you the difference in perspective on international sports event in these two countries.

It wasn't too long ago when ESPN (US) and ESPN2 (US) had World Cup qualifying matches from Europe LIVE.

Remember the epic England vs Italy clash from Wembley in February 1997? That one was LIVE on ESPN US after thousands of viewers wrote letters to ESPN after I found out that ESPN was sitting on the US TV rights but had not scheduled a broadcast 8 weeks prior to the match.

Of course, the party ended with the 1998 World Cup. ESPN changed its business plan: ESPN would not put any more games on, preferring instead to either sublicense them to Setanta or air them on the now-defunct ESPN Extra pay-per-view channel.

The long-range business plan was always ESPN Deportes, which launched 10 years after it was first proposed by ESPN executives.

Note that ESPN2 will have 13 UEFA Champions League games in the 2004-2005 season. I understand that UEFA requires ESPN to put those games on a non-pay-per-view channel in the US with a minimum number of households. ESPN Deportes currently does NOT pass enough households to meet that contractual requirement.

We don't get ESPN news here. I wonder if Sky Sports on FSW will show highlights?

As far as I know, UEFA is not embargoing highlights for news purposes.

FOX Sports World Report should be able to use 90 seconds of highlights every night during Euro 2004.

You'd better hope they don't get pre-empted by the greater Missoula cow-chip tossing competition if Reagan dies again.

I do remember watching a Germany vs. Brazil friendly on ESPN in 1998 just before the World Cup.
