Before he got injured, what position did he play? And what did the position look like employing Fellaini, Cahill and Pienarr?

And anyone know when he's coming back?

From left to right the midfield generally looked like...

------------- striker

------------- Cahill
Pienaar - Neville - Fellaini - Arteta

------------ defense

However he has played in numerous positions and Everton, particularly last season, employed a number of different systems with the players moving around as required. It included Cahill and Fellanini playing further forward when Everton had no strikers available.

I believe Arteta is due to return this month (September).

Arteta started on the right but after the poor start to the season (inclusing that defeat away to Wigan!) he moved to the middle where his and the teams form picked up.

Pienaar was then on the left, Osman on the right and at the time we had no strikers so Fellaini played off Cahill.

As the previous poster said he should be back sometime this month. It can't come quick enough! We have missed him badly these past 8 months

He has to play in the middle. No one can control the game for us as much as Mikky can.

Before he got injured he was in the form of his life in the middle. Our strongest lineup is with Arteta Fellaini and Cahill in the middle (Neville at rb). But mostly we had no strikers so we never really got to play it.

correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't arteta have to move centrally because all of your strikers got injured? and therefore, cahill and fellaini had to move up front?

He has to play in the middle. No one can control the game for us as much as Mikky can.

I'm not a big fan of having Arteta in the middle in a classic attacking midfielder role.

To me, he's looked more effective playing a combination of in the middle and on the wing. Similar to the way Pienaar plays.

Looking at the team as a whole, I'd like to see us play one striker up front -- Yak (or Saha or Jo). And either Cahill or Fellaini as a withdrawn striker (or attacking midfielder, if you like).

Pienaar (or Bilya) and Arteta on the wings, Neville as defensive midfielder, and Osman (or Rodwell) in the middle to provide Neville defensive help but also add some attacking options.

In the back, Baines has earned himself a starting spot as left fullback. And Jags is one of the best center backs in the league.

Unfortunately, Yobo just doesn't seem to be the same player he was a few years ago. And Hibbert likewise has seen better days.

So hopefully either Distin or Heitinga (or both? :) ) can pick up some of the slack.

I would prefer Neville to play at right back, he is solid and nothing else in midfield. The way Rodwell is playing he can make that defensive midfield position his own.

I prefer Arteta in the middle, with two wide men in Pienaar and Billy he finally has some options, too often it was through the middle or nothing.

Talking of Billy there is a lot of pressure on the lad. We have been crying out for a pacy winger for years so there will be a lot of expectation on his shoulders.

If it comes off he can offer us an attacking outlet we haven't had in years (something Andy Van was supposed to offer us!!!)

Arteta didn't play an attacking central midfield role. He mostly dropped off and dictated play. Before he got injured he show steel like we hadn't seen from him before. I never used to like him in the centre, but before he got injured he was in the form of his career there.

arteta was playing almost a dmid role with felli and cahill in front of him. it was his best position. on the wings he was absolutely wasted. it was a rather withdrawn attacking mid position (hence the almost dmid) but it allowed at least 4/5 of the lads to get in front of him and give him options to play the tune. and he was playing it well.

i'd like to see something like this:

howard
hib/heit --- jags -- distin --- baines
nev -- rodwell
arteta
peanut ----------------- billy
cahill
------- jo/saha/yak ---------

if we take off rodwell/only sub him in rather than throw him in the deepend all the time:

howard
hib/heit --- jags -- distin --- baines
nev
arteta
peanut -- felli ------ billy
cahill
------- jo/saha/yak ---------

felli and arteta will have to switch off on who goes forwards more. cahill has the option of being a 2nd striker or being in midfield. eitherway it seems to be his best position adn i think he's earned it... tho with his attitude lately he seems a bit entitled and that annoys me. it will be good for ALL the players to have competition for a starting spot.

(obvs the ppl divided by a "/" are interchangable. ;) pick 'n mix)

Great plan spiderkin. But you must remember, this is an eleven a side game.

oh shit. ~sigh~ it's been a really long day.

i meant to put pnev/rodwell. and then switch off cahill and felli. it's what i've been debating for a while, drop felli or cahill etc. i knew i shouldn't try and talk all logical when i feel this shitty.

and just think. i'm here doing math to credit our customer's accounts  can.not.deal. :(

edit: with jags not back yet, i'd put pnev in def. and rodwell in front. I did actually have an 11 member team in my head... a couple of them. just started mixing them all up. oh well.

Yes, but if we can get away with it, spider kin will deserve all the credit for us winning the CL. :D

Don't feel embarrassed -- you're in good company. I proposed a 4-5-2 lineup a few years ago in the FC Dallas forum. :)

Rumours are that Arteta will be out till well into the new year, possibly as late as March, after suffering a setback in his recovery,

Just what we need, he is the one player we could do with right now, I just hope when he does return that he is still the same player.

Arteta was the linchpin of the 4-6-0. If he can recreate the form he had last year, then we're laughing. That Newcastle game was a killer for us.
