View Full Version : Who here actually drives with both hands on the wheel?

Just wanted to get the general consensus on this, because I find it nigh on impossible to drive like that. Yet, on shows like Top Gear, where guys are drifting and racing, they have both hands on the wheel. Makes no sense...

Well if you're racing, you definitely need to maintain tight control of the steering wheel, so it makes sense to see that on TV. In my very limited experience with racing, if you try it with one hand, it's almost impossible to maintain any sort of line.

In terms of regular driving, I usually only go with two hands on the wheel when road conditions are really bad, or if I'm on one of those stretches of highway where everyone is going 85+ and I feel like I have to do the same to keep with traffic.

Depends on how fast I'm going, and what the road/weather conditions are.

I drive with one hand because I am Lebanese.

One hand. How do you shift otherwise?

Going fast on the highway with ridiculous North Carolina drivers though, I use 2. (They don't understand that tail-gaiting has a purpose -- to express anger or to tell someone to get over. They tail you for no reason whatsoever, all the time.)

Most of the time i use one hand, but i switch it up constantly.

Like everyone else, if the conditions are poor or if i'm moving really fast (I rarely go more than 20 KM over the speed limit), i will use two hands.

I thought people would be more laid back in the south?(Well it is the highway, but still...). Anyway, I still drive with one hand in poor conditions, it's like I'm calibrated to drive like that. Driving with two hands feels clunky and unnecessary.

A lot of those cars have paddle-shifters, so you wouldn't be able to shift without both hands on the wheel. And for the cars that don't, the drivers are probably used to it from race cars/ cars that do.

Been in a few bad accidents. Sometimes catch myself with only one hand on the wheel. Usually when the windows are down but nervous habit to drive with two now.

Driving with 2 hands is advocated also incase of breaking suddenly or slamming in to a car. It reduces your chances of your rib cage getting damaged by slamming into the steering wheel incase the air bags are slow to react.

1 hand in smaller inner roads (25-35 mph).. 2 hands rest of the time for me.
I guess I shd vote as '2 hands' in that case. hmm.. not a citizen btw

I thought people would be more laid back in the south?(Well it is the highway, but still...). You would think, but like I said, I don't think it's about being aggressive. I've asked people around here why they do that, and it's like they don't even notice it.

I do sometimes use 2 hands, (when travelling at high speeds and/or weaving thru traffic) but I'm definitely not a good citizen. Otherwise, it's one hand for me... how you can parallel park with 2 hands is completely beyond me. In fact, anytime I'm going in reverse I have to use only 1 hand.

Had to drive in reverse today to get away from a girls dad. Noticed that it is near impossible to move fast in reverse using 2 hands.

Also, i've noticed that if i'm going kind of slow (under 70KM/H), a lot of the time, i drive with my knees.

Almost always with one hand on the wheel. Especially when the weather is nice. During snowstorms or heavy rain I'll use both hand for control purposes.

2 hands when it's poor conditions or above 75 mph. One mainly for everything else, mainly switching music since my attention span is nonexistent.
