If he's good, I suppose it is better they signed him than if they lost him to a team overseas. The question is where is he going to play? Hopefully he gets loaned somewhere.

Goff (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2009/09/hamids_signing.html#more):

Payne, on the new MLS rule that allows clubs to sign academy players without initially having to make room for them on the 24-man roster: "We needed to protect these young players in our development system. There were a lot of other clubs from outside the country who were looking at our players, and we actually had made it very difficult on ourselves to sign these players. It's very unusual for the league to make a competitive change during the season: The decision was made to let teams sign extra players from their youth system but the compromise was that they couldn't play in MLS this year."

Did we know this? I'm glad that MLS is acting to remove barriers. First there was the ridiculous "you can only sign one player before other teams can raid your academy" rule. That's been loosened. Now the league is allowing clubs to sign academy guys even with a full roster, with the caveat that they can't appear in league play.

Hopefully next season the developmental rosters are re-expanded a little bit so that there will be more breathing room for Academy guys.

This makes him the 4th academy player signed? I remember Tally Hall at Houston and thought Chivas had some one. Don't remember who else. Anyone have a list?

Chivas signed Mayen, Flores, and Cesar Zamora

LA has signed Tristan Bowen.

Hamid could easily be our next big thing in the GK position. Celtic wanted to sign him, but he did not qualify for a WP.

That's right. I had the names mixed up.

And wasn't Flores Sueno MLS and not an Academy product?

He won Sueno, then joined CDUSA Academy, then signed pro a while later.

Jorge Flores and Gerson Mayen were both ambiguous signings. Occasionally Chivas USA would just sign a young player out of the blue. I don't think it was through the official Academy pathway, although they did play for their youth teams. At that time, youth teams weren't connected through the Academy system, though.

The Revs also signed a HS kid a few years ago -- Brandon Tyler. I'm not sure how exactly that worked. I guess if a club is interested in a kid and said kid is not a well-known process, MLS just lets the club file a discovery. Who knows.

I do think Cesar Zamora was an academy signing, though.
