My sub to 442 will be expiring in June 2004. So I get a nice letter from Haymarket Publishing telling me that if I would like to continue receiving 442 for another year, it will cost me $99 USD.

The past 2 years, I've been able to get it for $30-40 USD.

Anybody else have a similiar experience with 442?

Yep. Happens all the time. Just don't re-up and wait a while. Eventually you should get another letter telling you of a special rate just for special people like yourself.

Might want to check out this thread from March and see if you can still get the deal that was being offered back then.

I called today and cited the offer in the other thread. I was told that offer expired May 5, but was offered a $49 renewal rate.

More than I've paid in the past, but still less than if you renew directly through Haymarket.

The phone number is (732) 424-7811.

Just got my first FINAL notice before my subscription expires. $99 offer. Guess I'll wait a month and see what happens. Seems like we always go through this. Seems like I always come to this site and find how to get the best rate from somebody who just resubscribed. Why don't they just give us the low rate right from the start?

oh well ... thanks everybody.

Their renewal notices for me never went lower than $99. I went to the local bookstore, bought a copy off the newstand and saw the insert card which offered the $49 rate.

I think that there are two rates that depend on the delivery method. The $99 rate gets first class delivery which I beleive means that you get the month's issue not much later than when it is released in the UK. Paying the cheaper rate goes second class/media and the issue comes in towards the middle or end of the month of release -- about the same time it hits the bookstores. Its still cheaper than the newsstand rate.

I just renewed a couple months ago using the $24 deal as discussed in this previous thread http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99715.

I received the July issue (the Euro 2004 Souvenir Issue with Owen, James, & Terry on the cover) on Saturday, June 5 IIRC. The July issue was to hit newstands in the UK on June 2. Not much of a lag at all. Now I don't always get it quite so close to the UK newstand date. It varies. But it's almost always here by the middle of the month.

So, I don't see that paying the cheaper rate has affected my delivery time.

Well,

I've called the phone number listed in the thread twice and have been quoted a price of $69 a year both times. Don't know how you guys are still getting it for $24.

There's a promotional code for the $24/year subscription (which I don't have on me), but I called this morning and the operator told me that the offer expired last month.

FYI, I was quoted $49.

Go to Borders, Barnes & Nobles, or some magazine rack place that has them on the shelves. If you can find one not in plastic wrap, look for the blown-in subscription cards. That's where the $24 subscription offers are.

I'm glad it hasn't affected you. When my subscription moved from Haymarket to EWA, I noticed that the issue gets to me later. Might be a geography thing. But EWA does have different rates for different delivery. I got my July issue on June 9. I'm not complaining. $49 is still better than $99.

Possibly a stupid question - I'm not a reader of 4-4-2 but love to support soccer in the USA - but why would I buy 4-4-2 when I get instant news on the INternet through websites, forums, and RSS?

Is there something they have that I can't get on the web? Please - no flames; legit question...

My wife asks the same question. I like 4-4-2 because it has some good content on the history of the game, interviews and in-depth coverage of the English game all in one place. Maybe I am also old-fashioned and like the tactile feel of reading a magazine or a book rather than e-books, etc.

Regarding coverage of the US game, I think 4-4-2 has tended to be generally though mildly condescending of the US and our attitudes toward soccer. But they also have pretty frequent articles about soccer in the US. Very little in depth coverage of MLS or US national team though.

I read it for the articles. :)

No, seriously, it's a good read. It's not for news, it's not timely enough for that. But the features are usually very good, and the historical stuff they'll do from time to time is outstanding. They can usually get interesting people for interviews, and they usually give frank answers.

It's a good read. I wish we had enough of a soccer culture in this country that we could have a magazine with that tone.

Kenn, you should check out ThreeSixOne if you haven't already. It's a pretty good read, even if the editor comes off like a pompous ass.

I would, but the jackass hasn't done an issue in a while.

Plus the occasional picture of a chick with no shirt on.
