Fifty years ago this July. Every Hungarian, or West German, over sixty must remember what they were doing on this day. Beating England at Wembley, England's first loss on home soil since . . . uh . . . 1066, in the game of the century a few months before is of little consolation to that missed World Cup winner's star on the jersey.
Why did the Hungarians lose?

Why did the Hungarians lose?
The Hungarians were unbeaten since May 1950 in 31 straight matches (27 wins, 4 draws) before losing this game. They were also defending Olympic champions in 1952, which was as grand as the FIFA World Cup at the time.
They defeated West Germany 8-3 in the first round of this World Cup, also defeating Korea Republic 9-0, Brazil in the qrtrfinals 4-2, and Uruguay in the semifinals on PK's (2-2). But several Hungarian players were injured since the Brazil game because both teams fought in the Hungarian dressing room. According to historical sources, Brazilian players came looking for the Hungarian team because they claimed one of their players was slapped by a Hungarian player on the bench. Sounds like a lie to me, sore losers. And Hungary's star player, Ferenc Puskas, had twisted his ankle in the brawl which he missed the semifinal and was shaky in the final.
In the final, with some of Hungary's players injured from previous matches and the Brazilian brawl, Hungary went up 2-0 on West Germany. But West Germany scored a 3rd goal in the last 6 minutes of the game to seal the win 3-2.
