“Um... unfortunately, people that don't know Bolivia very much think that we are all just indian people from the west side of the country, it's La Paz all the image that we reflect, is that poor people and very short people and indian people ... I'm from the other side of the country, the east side and it's not cold, it's very hot and we are tall and we are white people and we know English so all that misconception that Bolivia is only and "Andinan" Country, it's wrong, Bolivia has a lot to offer and that's my job as an ambassador of my country to let people know much diversity we have"

Damn, I feel sorry for Bolivia (I really mean it)

"Unfortunately, people that don't know Bolivia very much think that we are all just indian people from the west side of the country, it's La Paz all the image that we reflect, is that poor people and very short people and indian people"

I'm from the other side of the country, the east side and it's not cold, it's very hot and we are tall and we are white people and we know English so all that misconception that Bolivia is only and "Andinan" Country, it's wrong, Bolivia has a lot to offer...

I'm little surprised to be defending a beauty queen, but if she is saying that what is unfortunate is the one-dimensional impression of Bolivia and its people, that's not necessarily racist. She never says the "Andino" people give the country a bad reputation - she just points out that they are not the only Bolivians. She also gives the impression, by her slightly exasperated tone, that people have probably doubted or expressed surprise that she considers herself Bolivian. I get that whenever I travel - no one thinks I'm American. Yeah, well, not all American girls look like Britney or Hillary Duff. Get over it.

Maybe she made a mistake in her English. I doubt it, though, because the words she uses indicate some long-term exposure in an english-speaking country, ex: "...people that..." is incorrect, but used colloquially. It should be "people who..." and someone learning English in a class would probably have been taught the difference.

Um, I was just trying to come up with what she might have meant to say, but it's very hard to re-work when she keeps saying "we are tall, we are white, we are smart..."

So I was thinking maybe she was trying to show diversity, but I am leaning toward believing she is in agreement with the underlying assumption that "Indian" and "short" mean "of lower value," than the "good" people she wants the world to know about.

she just tried to take all ignorants to a country tour, and made some remarks that not all you are ready to understand.

I know of a town in honduras full of tall people, blond and blue eyed..... gringos no!
the same for a small town outside Medellin colombia, Marinilla has more blue eyed and blondish looking people than Miami.....or NY....

Miss BOlivia is taking about the old cliches that call for all bolivians being short and indian descendants.... NOT true! Not not a racist comment at all

Definition of "racism"

Dictionary.com:
- The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
- Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

“Just like in most countries in the World there's a stereotype that all people in that country look the same. People around the World might think that everybody in Bolivia is descendent of "indians" and I think that we have that stereotype because most people in the capital city are "indians" (actually, Bolivia is 60% indian, 25% mestizo and 15% white), but the truth is that Bolivia is a very diverse country. In the region were I'm from there's a lot of "white" people. Bolivia has a lot to offer and that's my job as an ambassador of my country to let people know much diversity we have"

First of all Beauty contestants shouldn't be listented to for thier thoughts after all its not an inteligence contest its a beauty contest. Its like asking a bimbo what the meaning of life is.

Second, when asked whats a big misconception in your country?
She could have easily said, "many of us are tall, not poor and live in warm areas like Santa Cruz." conecting "indian" with being "poor" is waliking into a public relations disaster. I'm sure a lot of Bolivia's easterners are probrably very pissed. Something tells me this chick was a daddys girl, who probrably lived in Bolivia's equivalent of Beverly Hills, and didn't have to lift a finger her whole life. Girls like this are good for only a few things. Their brains and their "lack of respect" for thier fellow (country-men and country-women) isn't one of them.

"Its true people adored Elvis, but they could care less what his opinon was."
