can someone please provide detail on some good ways to balance weight lifting to gain a little upper strength, and speed drills to gain accleration and speed. I need to work on both for next season and I would appreciate any help you guys have.

At college I always saw the sprinters doing sprints with parachutes. I would assume that was their attempt to gain speed, but I have no idea if it worked.

I used to run track and I was a sprinter. Not anymore due to soccer schedule. Anyways, the parachutes just build up enough resistance to let your leg muscles get stronger as you use it. It worked for me.

All of the above suggestions are good ones. Resistance of sorts (players attached by bungee cords, pulling a parachute) are pretty common in some schools (like Coerver training). Also, Don Beebe (the former NFL player) has a place in Chicago I believe called the Speed Academy. His philosophy is that you are faster by: (a) striding quicker and (b) taking longer strides. So some of this is not just strength training but also training yourself to take longer strides and take them quicker. I think the last Outside Magazine had an abreviate version of one of his speed drills. I also thought some of the Dutch schools had drills for working on your first step (quickness) which is not quite the same as speed but probably more valuable on the soccer field.
