I was filling my tank about a week ago in Reston, VA and saw a guy with a car that had "WHU FC" as the licence plate.
"Hammers, yeah?" I asked him. He seemed stunned, then said yes as he was born less than 2 miles from the ground. The semi-final was earlier that day so I asked if he'd heard what happened as I didn't want to spoil the result. He was amazed that I knew not only who or what West Ham was, but also that I had known the result from earlier.
He said in the seven years he's had the plate, I was only the second ever person to ask him about it. I'll admit, when he asked me about how I knew what the plate was or why I followed English football I was little embarrassed to admit that I was United supporter, what with the sterotypes and such. I told him about seeing George Best when I was a boy and he couldn't blame me for that...
I wished him luck in the playoff final and that was that. Nice bloke too.
