Couple of quick questions about the season for European leagues:

1. Has the season always run from August to May? If not, when did this change take place?

2. Wouldn't it make more sense from a weather standpoint to have the season run from February to November?

I realize with the continental and WC tourneys in summer it would be hard to buck tradition, but dudes shouldn't have to run around in gloves playing in January.

Would you rather play 90 minutes of football in 40 degree weather or 90 degree weather?

It's because we play cricket in the summer.

Some of the Euro leagues with more extreme winter weather don't play during the coldest months. Sweden and Russia come to mind. But I'm not sure if that's a winter break or if they lay March to December, or what.

It goes back to when the sport first started. As an organised game, football only started as a way for cricketers to keep fit during the long winter months. Little did they know that soon the sport would completely surpass cricket, but by then the season and the winter football culture was too ingrained.
