This is beginning to be a joke. Why don't we go to this tourney anymore? We were a great team to have there and we had some good results.
If youare going to say that we have to play the Mls league out then I say to you, go grow some balls.
If there ever was a tourney to make our team a better one this would be it.
I feel let down again by the "waspy" attitude this country has when it comes to international football.

You Yanks usually sign petitions when your pissed :D

I'm all in agreement going to COPA AMERICA, even if it's a B or C team.
Getting more Americans blooded by playing internationally is good for USA soccer.
I disagree with USSF logic.
The big question is what do Athens and Mexico City have MOST in common........??
The smog...!!

This is just wrong. Sending a team out there to get killed is gonna hurt our FIFA ranking, which is a factor in seeding. If playing Copa cost us a #1 seed, y'all would be howling.
Plus, a B or C team is still gonna take away from MLS. It's the right decision. Since MLS has recently lost Mathis, McBride, and Bocanegra, we don't need the rest of the stars leaving for a month in midseason.

I know about the USSF excuses i mean reasons for not wanting to participate. I have yet to hear or read American press reports critisizing the USSF or players speaking against the decision to not participate. I know many fans are pissed that the USSF keeps turning down invitation upon invitation but they are few and apart.

You expected to read press reports?
There wouldn't be any media attention if we did particiapate.

The U.S. was invited, but they declined to go. That was smart wasnt it? A chance to play meaningful games, against some of the best teams, if not THE BEST teams in the world. A chance to give the American players EXPERIENCE, and they just decline. Man I dont know what the coach was thinking. Well hopefully the South American Federation wont take it to heart and invite the U.S. fro the next Copa America.

We never thought we had the space on the Calendar to go. We were planning on the Olympics, which is in that time frame, our Euro players would have had no off-season, MLS is still in season, and plsu we have qualifers during that time period...literally no time do this for a meaningless tournament from the USA point of view, playing a few matches against world powers won't do much for us.

World Cup 2006. USA has an outside chance of being a protected seed, Which means we won't have to face Holland, Germany, France, England, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, or Spain in the 1st round.

"many", "few and apart". I'm confused.
And as far as the seeding goes, US is #11 in the FIFA rankings as of now. If the US can move back up a few spots, and maybe there's one upset (ie Netherlands in 2002) through qualifiers, there you have it, US could crack the top 8. Is it probable, no. Is it unrealistic, also no. This is simply a matter of statistics, not of opinion, or of whether others think the US "deserves" to be a top seed. I'm not in favor of the US opting out of Copa America, IMHO the ranking reason and the MLS reason do not outweigh the potential benefits of being in a world class tournament. However, regardless of one's opinion about the US being in Copa America or not, saying that the US has no chance of getting a top 8 ranking, and a pool A spot for WC2006 means one is ignoring simple facts.

This is a very short-sighted response..I'll admit that after initially being bothered about not going to CA, I changed my mind considering the narrowness of MLS rosters, upcoming qualifiers AND the Olympics (so much for that)....
But to flat-out dismiss the fact that Costa Rica and especially Mexico improved greatly through the qualifiers right after Copa America 2001 is laughable... Furthermore, I'd say Honduras also was well served by the Copa America competition, where they got to the semis by beating Brazil....Regardless of the various excuses we'd like to present, Honduras beat us in DC, and no doubt deserved to. Only a totally unjustifiably bad result vs. T&T at home stopped them from going to Japorea instead of Mexico...
You might want to say Honduras today is not as good as three yrs ago, but that 's a different topic...
If you want to be an American soccer snob, at least do more than write one-liners that do not fit with reality....IIRC, the USMNT was also a bad result away from missing the WC, both during the Hex and the game right before it.....
I am a US fan, but certainly not one to put down Copa America, much less imply that it cannot help teams get better....

Wow, I wasn't aware we're that close to a seed. I would feel weird getting a seed.

FIFA rankings have nothing or not much to do with WC 2006 group seedings if USA gets there.
As far as i know the rules the points are calculater based on past WC performances, getting to the WC gets you most credit, then would depend how you done in it. FIFA rankings gets a very low % when it comes to adding the numbers up.
It is just a shame that we do not participate in Copa America.
