So I'm moving to Buenos Aires at the end of September...no real plans yet but hope to do something while I'm there. I want to live in a semi-nice/nice neighborhood with restaurants and nice little dive bars and clubs. A place with young people, not too mainstream (think SF Mission of Brooklyn but without the hipsters). Any suggestions and price range I should expect to pay? Prices on Craigslist (US$300-600) are inflated, say my Argentine friends.

I welcome all suggestions. Thanks for your help!

PS. I'm a Boca fan, ever since the Tevez era...

Hmm... Puerto Madero though that's probably pretty expensive. Then there's Belgrano and Palermo that may fit your liking.

Thanks, I'll make sure to not wear any Boca gear around there! Any opinions on San Telmo, Barrio Norte, San Cristobal and Almagro? A lot of the places on Craigslist seem to be in these neighborhoods.

Don't worry about that, except on match days. One block away from el Monumental at a street corner there's a spray painted banner in blue letters(or there used to be) that says "Racing campeón" and someone later added in red "De la amargura", note that Racing isn't from Buenos Aires even.

Regarding those neighbourhoods, Barrio Norte is nice but may be a bit expensive. San Cristobal seems average but i don't know much about it same with Almagro. Then San Telmo, while it's a very traditional neighbourhood, well there may be better options.

Are you coming to Buenos Aires for tourism or business?

Thank you. I will be relocating for neither business nor tourism; I will be doing some tele-commuting but really I just want to live there and enjoy a nice summer in Buenos Aires and use it as a base to explore neighboring countries.

Most everyone has hit on the good spots. As mentioned Sal Telmo has gone up in price over the years and is definitely a nice area to live and not as expensive as Recoleta or Barrio Norte. Palermo which was also mentioned is pretty central and these days has a few mini disctricts like Palermo Viejo, Palermo Soho.....depending on where you look the rents could be manageable or not. Close to Palermo is Villa Crespo which is pretty much smack in the middle of BsAs. Villa Crespo was traditionally the Jewish part of the city but these days not so much. It went through a faze where it started going to shit but with the desire for people to live in the city an influx of capitol (from where who knows) has come into the barrio which has seen an increase in refurbished and remodeled apartments at good prices. The area lacks a good park but none are too far away either. The majority of my family is either in Recoleta or San Isidro these days but we still own the family home in Villa Crespo that has been with us since the 1930's.

LOL Brooklyn without hipsters is not Brooklyn. Either way if that's specifically what you're looking for than as was mentioned before Palermo or Recoleta. But it also depends on your price range.

Barrio Norte is my fav, followed by Palermo near Plaza Italia and up Sante Fe.
