The new Wembley is apparently on track to be finished in March 2006, possibly earlier. This is after the last qualifiers but in good time for a showpiece first match before the World Cup 2006.
So, who do you think England should play? I've narrowed it down to what I think most people will agree are the best choices.
Brazil because it's always interesting to see them and would be a good high profile event.
Germany because they have been the scene of a lot of our footballing battles. They also played the last game at the old Wembley, so this would be a good way of kicking off the new Wembley by getting them before their World Cup starts.
Scotland, the auld enemy. The first ever international opponent and would guarantee a passionate match, even if the sweaties are rubbish these days. The sweaties are my top choice and I reckon the FA may think the same.

Shouldn't it be someone you guys can beat?
Stadium doesn't open until March 2006. The yanks will still be fighting for their lives in world cup qualifying against the likes of Haiti and Cuba then. So we'll have to stick to playing European or South American teams, who are superior to the rest of the world anyway.

Well seeing as England beat Germany 5-1 in Munich in their last match and knocked the Scots out of Euro 2000 in their last meeting, your petty bitching is weak.
I sense some bitterness because no-one is interested in the US :D Get over it, no-one cares about the US when it comes to football.

How bout hosting Wales in the first game at the new Wembley.... sort of a thank you for the use of the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff for all of the recent games there?
But I agree a game with Scotland would be great.

Not England NT games, but all the League Cup games.... I dunno if it was a big deal or not for Wales to agree to hosting those English league/cup games. If not, then just ignore this.
Scotland at Wembley......

Don't think it was that big a deal. Figure they made quite a bit of money from it. Don't reckon it would be the best time for a friendly with Wales, with them being in our qualifying group. I vote Brazil, or if that's not possible Scotland. I reckon we would beat the German's but the risk of them winning the first match in the new wembly, as they won the last in the old, is insufferble. Though it could be a good way to lay the ghost if you are of a more optomistic disposition than me!

Maybe the England national team shouldnt open wembley. This is an important game that can only be played against a high profile team. They are not good enough to beat any of the top teams.
they would lose to Brazil, Germany, France. They could get Argentina but they would also lose to them unless they get Collina to ref the game and give them a dubious penalty like in the world cup. I say they should play Scotland :)

What are you talking about? Being a traditional football nation England is on pair with any of the top teams playing at home. Besides a 3-1 victory in 1995 I don't remember other opportunity when Brazil beat England in tehir home, and Brazil is usually invited to play there. And if they can beat Germany by 5-1 at german soil surely they can repeat that at their own. France? They aren't as scary as the hype that makes them.
You just can't get over the fact that England doesn't give you the same attention that you Americans give them.
